About Synchron Synchron’s vision is to build non-surgical brain–computer interfaces at global scale that protect the fundamental human rights of freedom of expression and autonomy. Our first mission is to develop motor decoders that restore the ability of 15 million people with paralysis to interact with the digital world. Our second mission is to develop whole-brain cognitive decoders that enable hundreds of millions of people with cognitive decline to preserve and expand their agency as cognition changes over time. In pursuing these goals, we aim not only to help humans flourish, but also to drive fundamental discoveries in human intelligence. Our team operates at the intersection of healthcare and technology, translating breakthrough research into real-world, safety-critical systems. Join us in shaping a more connected and accessible future. Location: Melbourne (and traveling within, Australia, and potential travel to Sydney) About the Job We are seeking an energetic, personable, and adaptive researcher to work directly with the pioneering participants of our brain-computer interface (BCI) product. This role bridges human neuroscience research, applied machine learning, and real-world BCI deployment. You will work closely with our machine learning, research engineering, clinical, and product teams to collect, analyze, and interpret neural and behavioral data, contributing directly to the improvement of real-time neural decoding models and user experience. Your work will directly translate to the ability of our users to control the BCI. The ideal candidate is resourceful, learns fast, handles uncertainties strongly, and has excellent experiment operations. You should be as comfortable speaking with participants and their caregivers as you are experimenting with model training pipelines or analyzing data. Responsibilities Conduct research sessions with BCI users, including setup, calibration, and structured data collection. Analyze and interpret multimodal data (neural, behavioral, video) to inform product and research decisions. Develop and iterate on machine learning models for neural signal decoding and behavioral prediction. Collaborate with machine learning and research engineering teams to align experimental protocols with product goals. Document findings and methodologies for internal and external dissemination. Support the design of human research protocols and ensure compliance with ethics and safety standards. Travel regularly as required to work with participants, clinicians, and collaborators. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Neuroscience, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience). Expertise in Python, with model training workflows (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, metaflow), and data science frameworks and tools (e.g., NumPy, Pandas, SciPy, matplotlib, seaborn) Expertise in machine learning techniques and applications for real-time systems Demonstrated ability to problem-solve under uncertainty and adapt quickly to new environments. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for working directly with BCI users and research participants. Ability to travel frequently to the participants for research sessions. Preferred Qualifications Experience conducting or supporting human research. Familiarity with brain–computer interface systems or electrophysiological data. Experience designing or executing experiments with human participants. Experience in applied research environments integrating software, hardware, and data science. Compensation The base salary range for this role is AUD100,000–AUD300,000 depending on experience, skills, and qualifications. In addition to base pay, this role may be eligible for discretionary bonuses and/or equity grants subject to board approval and company policy.
