About the role The Painter is responsible for the preparation of various surfaces and the application of paint, varnish, and other finishes to protect, maintain, and decorate interior and exterior surfaces of buildings and other structures. This role requires a high level of attention to detail, a strong understanding of materials and techniques, and a commitment to safe work practices to ensure all projects are completed to the highest standard, on time and within budget. Duties and Responsibilities Surface Preparation: Preparing surfaces for painting by washing, scraping, sanding, filling holes, cracks, and joints with putty, plaster, or other fillers. Removing old paint or wallpaper using sanders, scrapers, heat guns, or chemical strippers. Applying primers or sealers to prepare surfaces for the final coat. Paint Application: Applying paint, stains, varnishes, and other finishes to surfaces using brushes, rollers, or spray equipment. Mixing and matching paints and colours to achieve the desired shade and consistency. Ensuring a high-quality finish, free from drips, runs, and other imperfections. Site and Equipment Management: Erecting and dismantling scaffolding, trestles, and ladders in a safe manner. Covering surfaces with drop cloths or masking tape and paper to protect from paint. Cleaning and maintaining all painting equipment, including brushes, rollers, and spray guns. Maintaining a clean, organised, and safe work area at all times. Quality and Compliance: Reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and specifications to understand project requirements. Inspecting and assessing work upon completion to ensure it meets company and client quality standards. Adhering to all relevant Australian Standards, building codes, and industry best practices. Work Health & Safety (WHS): Complying with all company WHS policies, procedures, and legislative requirements. Correctly using and maintaining all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Identifying, reporting, and mitigating potential hazards in the workplace. Safely handling and storing paints, solvents, and other hazardous materials. Teamwork and Communication: Liaising effectively with the Site Supervisor, clients, and other tradespeople to coordinate work and resolve issues. Providing guidance to apprentices or trade assistants as required. Completing required documentation, such as timesheets and job reports, accurately and on time. Essential Skills Proven experience as a professional painter in a commercial or residential setting. In-depth knowledge of painting materials, techniques, and equipment. Possession of a valid Construction Induction Card (White Card). Strong understanding of and commitment to Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulations and safe work practices. Physical fitness and stamina to perform manual tasks, including working at heights and in various weather conditions. Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Experience with specialised finishes, wallpapering, or heritage restoration work.
