We're partnering with a well-established, Papua New Guinean-owned international freight business to appoint a senior Freight Group Manager for their Lae operation. This is a genuine leadership role for an experienced freight forwarding professional who understands what it takes to run large-scale operations in a challenging environment and is looking for long-term career progression, not a short-term posting. The opportunity Our client is a long-standing player in the PNG market, recognised for operational capability, strong governance, and a people-first approach. They've built a reputation for delivering reliable freight and project logistics solutions while maintaining high standards around safety, compliance, and environmental responsibility. Based in Lae and reporting directly to the General Manager, you'll be part of the senior leadership team, leading six direct reports and an operational workforce of more than 200 staff. You'll have full accountability for the freight forwarding function, including performance, compliance, financial outcomes, and customer relationships. Key responsibilities include: Leading and developing freight group managers while working closely with operations, logistics, and HR Managing senior relationships with airlines, shipping lines, overseas agents, and key commercial partners Ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements, including PNG Customs Trusted Trader and NAQIA Owning the P&L, setting annual budgets, and driving operational and financial performance Developing procedures and training programs to deliver a consistent, high-quality service Embedding safety management systems across all freight forwarding activities Acting as a senior escalation point for key clients and suppliers Producing regular management and performance reports About you This role will suit a commercially minded freight leader who is comfortable taking ownership, leading in complex environments, and making decisions that balance risk, service, and profitability. You will ideally bring: Approximately 10 years' experience in freight forwarding, with strong knowledge of documentation, customs, compliance, and global routing At least 5 years' experience in a senior freight forwarding management role Proven leadership capability across large, diverse teams Strong financial acumen, including P&L ownership and KPI reporting A practical, hands-on approach with a strong commitment to health and safety The ability to operate autonomously and provide after-hours support when required Tertiary qualifications in business, logistics, or a related discipline are preferred. Prior experience in an overseas or expat role will be well regarded.
