We are looking for a hands-on couple to support the store, with one partner leading the takeaway and kitchen operations. The Company The Yirrkala Community Store employs up to 10 people and provides groceries, clothing, fresh produce, general hardware and fuel supported by a popular takeaway kitchen. Yirrkala is a small community in East Arnhem Region, Northern Territory, 18 kilometres southeast of the mining town of Nhulunbuy, on the Gove Peninsula in East Arnhem Land. Rich in history, art and culture, Yirrkala is home to the Yolgnu people and is well known for its Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Arts Centre, positioned opposite the store attracting a wide variety of tourists and community members to the area. The Roles This is a full-time role operating on a roster that averages around 44 hours per week Support the smooth day-to-day operation of the community store Take responsibility for the operation of the takeaway and kitchen Provide duty supervision of staff and store operations as required Deliver friendly, respectful customer service Maintain high standards of food safety, cleanliness, and workplace safety Build strong working relationships with staff, management, and community members Key Responsibilities Takeaway & Kitchen Operations (Lead role – one partner) Lead the daily operation of the takeaway, including food preparation, cooking, and service Ensure food quality, consistency, and value for customers Maintain full compliance with Food Safety and Hygiene standards Oversee kitchen workflow, preparation planning, stock use, and waste minimisation Supervise, train, and support kitchen staff Maintain a clean, organised, and Food Safe-compliant kitchen Assist with menu execution, pricing input, and catering activities Work with Store Management to identify improvements in takeaway operations Store & Duty Supervision (Shared) Provide duty supervision of the store Open and close the store Undertake customer service and cashier duties Receive, rotate, and replenish store stock Maintain store presentation and cleanliness Complete end-of-day register and balancing procedures Provide short-term relief for Store Management by agreement Team Leadership, Safety & Compliance (Shared) Lead by example in professionalism, punctuality, hygiene, and presentation Support and motivate staff to create a positive team environment Follow and support store policies, procedures, and security requirements Ensure safe work practices and compliance with Workplace Health & Safety standards Communicate clearly and respectfully with staff, management, and customers Essential Skills Couple application – this role is designed for two people working together One partner must hold a current Food Supervisor Certification One partner must have formal chef training or equivalent practical experience suitable for a retail/takeaway environment , such as: Certificate III in Commercial Cookery, or Demonstrated experience leading food preparation and cooking in a takeaway, café, or similar setting Demonstrated experience in food service and/or retail operations Supervisory experience and the ability to lead and support staff Experience managing inventory and stock control Strong knowledge of food safety, hygiene, and safe work practices Excellent customer service and cash-handling skills Current C Class Driver’s Licence (mandatory for both applicants) National Police Clearance Basic computing and point-of-sale skills A respectful, community-focused approach and understanding of Aboriginal culture Forklift licence. Additionally, a fully furnished 2 x 1 low maintenance home is included at a heavily subsidised rate, excluding electricity costs. The home is located in town close to shops, schools and facilities. A vehicle is also provided for company and some private use. Note: Pets are not allowed. On completion of the probationary period, agreed relocation expenses will be reimbursed.
