About the branch The Fisheries Operations Branch provides high level deterrence for illegal, unreported & unregulated fishing activities. It does so by providing leadership, contract & project management & policy development. About the team The Duty Officer and Co-ordination team is responsible for: Supporting AFMA's compliance programs by identifying and responding to: suspected breaches of Australia's fisheries laws suspected breaches of international conservation and management measures on the high seas where Australia has an interest. Contributing to the development of strategies to detect and deter illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing in the Australian Fishing Zone and on the high seas where Australia has an interest. working closely with our domestic and international counterparts in sharing - information and planning regional fisheries operations to further enhance our abilities to detect and deter illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing (IUU). Our ideal candidate Our ideal candidate will have: extensive experience and skills in providing high-level leadership and works effectively to a small team excellent decision making, communications (both oral and written) and liaison skills experience working in an operational environment, strategically minded and co-ordinating operational planning experience successfully managing both internal and external relationships. extensive experience and skills in providing operational advice to senior management. the ability to demonstrate strong experience in working effectively and collaboratively within a small team and providing high-level leadership to optimise the performance of team members. excellent communications and liaison skills and experience in liaising and negotiating with internal and external stakeholders including international agencies. relevant experience in researching and analysis data and making decisions based on expertise and in accordance with relevant frameworks, legislation, and policies. The key duties of the position include In addition to meeting the work level standards (WLS) of the position classification, the duties are: Advise on procedures and issues relating to the apprehension of illegal foreign fishing vessels in the AFZ, including the seizure, forfeiture, and disposal of foreign fishing vessels. Liaise with personnel from Maritime Border Command (MBC), Royal Australian Navy, State and Territory enforcement agencies, and various other government agencies in relation to day-to-day operations relating to fisheries. Engage on tactical response actions for the deployment of resources and on the apprehension of illegal operators and report on unusual and critical incidents to senior management. Conduct, and support overt and covert surveillance and monitoring operations. Analyse surveillance and monitoring data holdings to identify illegal fishing activity. Provide regular input into AFMA reporting on foreign compliance matters. Conduct operational planning to ensure AFMA's legislative and international monitoring obligations are met.
