OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE The framing technician will assist the paintings conservation team in a wide range of tasks to prepare and protect the NGA paintings collection and paintings on loan to the gallery. The paintings team are responsible for the preparation and treatment of traditional paintings on fabric and board supports. The National Collection has an internationally acclaimed paintings collection and the most diverse Australian collection. The Gallery is a leader in lending, touring and exhibiting traditional and contemporary art. This role will undertake activity related to the framing and structural support of paintings for display and transport, working closely with the painting's conservators. This may include tasks such as fitting paintings in their frames to conservation standards, preparing backing boards and handling systems, designing and commissioning frames and stretchers and assisting with stretching large format paintings. Frame making and manufacture of stretchers may also be required. The key duties of the position include WHAT WILL YOU DO? In accordance with the APS 4 work level standards, you will: Assist Paintings Conservation staff with the storage, display, conservation and packing requirements of the NGA paintings collection. This role will assist in all aspects of preparation and maintenance of paintings supports and frames to meet the NGA display, storage and lending requirements. Undertake and maintain accurate written and photographic documentation and records for all work undertaken. Communicate framing requirements to a wide range of stakeholders. In consultation, carry out the structural preparation and framing/reframing of paintings for exhibition, loan, storage and transportation. Work to include modification of primary and secondary supports and specification and modification of new and existing frames. As directed undertake responsibility for a regular programme of basic maintenance of framed works on display and in storage in the Gallery. Assist paintings conservators in the routine operation of the Section. Maintain framing workshop space and equipment. Assist the Senior Paintings Conservator in maintaining materials stocks, placing orders, researching new/alternative materials. Support the department as required for disaster response and other corporate requirements.
