Category: Legal Location: Melbourne Victoria Australia The Opportunity Our client is a highly regarded commercial law firm that defines itself as a "boutique top-tier." Established in 2006 by partners from top-tier backgrounds, the firm was built on a vision to disrupt the traditional legal model. They combine the agility, personal relationships, and earned trust of a boutique practice with the technical expertise and high-end client base of a top-tier firm. This is a rare opportunity for a senior practitioner to join a firm where culture is not just a buzzword on a website, but a lived experience. You will be joining an industry-leading team recognized in the Legal 500 Asia Pacific and Best Law Firms in Australia (2025/2026 editions). We are seeking a Principal to help lead a high-performing team of 7 lawyers. This role is ideal for a commercially minded technical expert who values autonomy, enjoys mentoring, and wants to operate in an environment that rejects the rigid bureaucracy of traditional "Big Law." About the Team & Practice The Superannuation & Financial Services team is renowned for its deep sector knowledge and commercial insight. The team acts for major industry, retail, and corporate superannuation funds, as well as exempt public sector schemes. On the financial services side, clients include Responsible Entities (REs), trustees (including ‘trustee for hire’ businesses), and global product issuers. The practice maintains excellent working relationships with key regulators, including APRA, ASIC, the ATO, the ASX, and Cboe Australia. Key Responsibilities As a Principal, you will play a pivotal role in the leadership of the practice group, balancing complex legal work with team management and business development. Legal & Advisory: Provide high-level strategic advice on the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act (SIS Act), Corporations Act , and the broader financial services regulatory framework. Advise on complex governance matters, regulatory compliance, and risk management frameworks (including FAR and CPS 511). Lead major transactions, including Successor Fund Transfers (SFTs) and mergers, seeing deals through from due diligence to execution. Advise on AFS licensing, disclosure obligations (PDS/RG 97), and Design and Distribution Obligations (DDO). Manage relationships with regulators (APRA, ASIC) on behalf of clients. Leadership & Mentoring: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to a team of 7 lawyers, ranging from Juniors to Senior Associates. Foster an open, collaborative environment where junior staff feel comfortable asking questions (maintaining the firm’s "open door" policy). Business Development: Actively manage and grow client relationships, embodying the firm’s philosophy of "boutique service for top-tier clients." Contribute to the firm’s market profile through thought leadership and industry networking. About You We are looking for someone who possesses sharp intellect and technical excellence but also brings a unique, engaging personality to the table. The firm hires people, not just billing units. Key Selection Criteria: Experience: 10 years PAE (Post Admission Experience) with significant specialisation in Superannuation and Financial Services Law. Technical Mastery: Deep understanding of the SIS Act, Corporations Act, and the current regulatory landscape (ASIC/APRA). Leadership: Proven experience in supervising and mentoring junior lawyers. Client Focus: A commercial approach that values swift action, flexibility, and clarity over "six-minute billing block" mentalities. Cultural Fit: You are authentic, approachable, and have interests outside of the law. You value a workplace that is relaxed and informal, yet highly professional in its output. Why Join This Firm? True Flexibility: The firm offers genuine flexible working arrangements that are respected and utilized, not just "lip service." The "Boutique Top-Tier" Model: Work on high-quality matters for blue-chip clients without the rigid hierarchy of a massive global firm. Culture & Socials: A relaxed, informal office environment with weekly drinks and legendary EOFY/Christmas parties. Support: Strong support for external study, ambitions outside of work, and community/sporting involvement. Remuneration: Competitive salary package commensurate with a Principal-level role in a top-tier equivalent practice. Details Apply Now
