The Director of National Parks (the Director) is responsible for six national parks, the Australian National Botanic Gardens, 58 Australian Marine Parks and the Heard Island and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. Parks Australia is the federal park agency that supports the Director, and they are a division of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (the Department). The Indigenous Trainee Development Program currently have three positions available over the following sections. Cultural Heritage Supporting the understanding, protection and conservation of cultural heritage across Parks Australia, including our iconic Jointly Managed parks, marine parks, island parks and Indigenous Protected Areas. Our work involves developing strategies, systems, standards and skills for cultural heritage management. We work closely with staff on individual parks and particularly with cultural heritage working groups that have strong cultural authority to guide work at a local level. Office of the Chief Remote Pilot The Office of the Chief Remote Pilot (OCRP) ensures the safe and compliant use of drones in accordance with Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) regulations and Departmental policy whilst delivering business outcomes using drones across the Department. The Department operates drones throughout Australia and Antarctica to meet the outcomes and key activities of the Department's Corporate Plan. Parks Property and Security The CFO and Corporate Services branch provides support to each Park and the Director of National Parks through the provision of a number of corporate services. The Parks Property and Security team provides support through planning, coordination, delivery and management of property, assets, security, and emergency management across the DNP. The key duties of the position include The Jobs This program is for new entrants to the APS and staff who want a permanent ongoing role. These roles operate within a training environment and is suitable for an individual developing foundational capabilities. The successful candidates will work under supervision, with increasing responsibility as skills develop. Cultural Heritage Work currently underway in the Section includes: Develop a Heritage Strategy for the Director of National Parks to apply to all areas of Parks Australia responsibility. Develop heritage inventories and enabling digital systems for heritage management that are used on our Parks. Develop guidance for heritage work to ensure there are good processes for statutory heritage protection and conservation work. Support the development of skills in cultural heritage management work, with a focus on inter-generational learning. Be involved in cultural heritage work that includes opportunities to travel to our parks, work on discreet projects, and gain a broad appreciation of cultural heritage management in different contexts. Office of the Chief Remote Pilot. Work closely with First Nations rangers in Parks Australia and other protected estates (e.g. IPAs) in supporting the use of drones and emerging technologies and undertake drone operations more broadly. Assist the Assistant Director - First Nations Capability & Strategic Engagement in engaging and delivering training of rangers in Jointly Managed National Parks and remote Indigenous Protected Areas. Provide feedback and suggest improvements for drone operations apps designed by First Nations rangers and training modules. Support the on-ground delivery of training for Parks Australia and Ranger Groups, including the Ghost Nets program. Contribute to the development of Parks Australia and First Nations rangers led design of environmental monitoring technologies and data analytics apps and reporting tools. Undertake drone operations to support the broader work program of the Office of the Chief Remote Pilot. Develop foundational capabilities in tenancy support, property operations, stakeholder engagement, and administrative coordination. Assist with day-to-day tenancy and property tasks, including coordinating with park staff and service providers. Help with collecting information for housing needs assessments and tenancy planning. Support the administration of Residential Tenancy Agreements, including scheduling and recording inspections. Assist with logging, tracking and following up on repairs and maintenance requests. Provide basic support for policy and procedure updates, including research and preparing drafts. Assist with communicating with staff and stakeholders and helping coordinate consultation activities Support asset planning work by updating records, collecting data, and preparing simple documentation. Prepare summaries, reports or data to support decision-making by senior staff.
