Our client is a global resources company operating major mining operations across Australia, extracting and processing critical minerals essential to modern industry and the energy transition. They operate multiple mine sites and processing facilities with significant electrical infrastructure supporting mining operations, material handling, and mineral processing. The organisation is investing substantially in expanding production capacity, upgrading existing facilities, and implementing new technologies to improve operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact. This includes major capital projects involving new electrical infrastructure, power distribution systems, and process electrification. They are seeking an Electrical Design Engineer to support the design and delivery of electrical systems across their Queensland mining operations. This role offers exposure to large-scale industrial electrical engineering within a resources environment. The Role As Electrical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, specification, and documentation of electrical systems supporting mining operations and mineral processing facilities. This includes power distribution, motor control systems, instrumentation and control infrastructure, and ancillary electrical services. You will work on capital projects ranging from greenfield developments to brownfield expansions and asset replacement programmes. This role requires expertise in industrial electrical design standards, mining electrical safety requirements, and the ability to deliver practical engineering solutions in an operational mining environment. You will collaborate with project managers, process engineers, maintenance teams, and construction contractors to deliver electrical infrastructure that meets operational, safety, and regulatory requirements. Key Responsibilities Design electrical power distribution systems for mining and processing facilities including HV and LV reticulation Develop motor control centre (MCC) and switchboard specifications and single-line diagrams Design electrical infrastructure for materials handling systems including conveyors, crushers, and stackers Prepare cable schedules, cable sizing calculations, and earthing system designs Conduct load flow analysis, fault level studies, and protection coordination studies Produce detailed electrical engineering drawings, specifications, and construction documentation Specify electrical equipment including transformers, switchgear, motor starters, and variable speed drives Ensure compliance with AS/NZS electrical standards and mining electrical safety regulations Coordinate with instrumentation and control engineers on interface requirements Support construction delivery through design clarifications, site inspections, and commissioning support Conduct design reviews and quality assurance checks on electrical designs Prepare technical reports, design justifications, and cost estimates for electrical systems Liaise with equipment suppliers and contractors on technical requirements and specifications Essential Requirements Tertiary qualification in electrical engineering Minimum 3-5 years' experience in electrical design for industrial, mining, or heavy industrial applications Strong understanding of AS/NZS 3000, AS/NZS 3008, and related electrical installation standards Experience with HV and LV electrical distribution system design Knowledge of motor control systems, variable speed drives, and industrial automation Proficiency with electrical design software including ETAP, SKM PowerTools, or equivalent Experience producing engineering drawings using AutoCAD or similar CAD platforms Understanding of protection coordination, fault analysis, and power system studies Ability to interpret P&IDs, equipment specifications, and process requirements Strong technical documentation and calculation skills Familiarity with mining electrical safety requirements and hazardous area classifications Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary engineering teams Desirable Criteria Experience in mining, mineral processing, or resources sector electrical engineering Knowledge of Queensland mining electrical safety regulations and recognised standards Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status or working towards registration Experience with hazardous area electrical design (Zone 20/21/22 or Division 1/2) Understanding of AS 2380 and IEC 60079 standards for explosive atmospheres Familiarity with arc flash analysis and electrical safety assessments Experience with power factor correction, harmonic analysis, and power quality studies Knowledge of substation design and HV switchyard layouts Background in project delivery within operational mining or industrial environments Experience with renewable energy integration or microgrid systems for remote mining operations Working Arrangement Hybrid working arrangements based in Brisbane with flexibility between office and remote work. Regular site visits to mining operations in Queensland required (typically 1-2 days per month, FIFO arrangements where applicable).
