Who we are Electricity Division provides policy advice to the Australian Government on matters that support electricity markets and systems to deliver beneficial outcomes for consumers. We support the Minister for Climate Change and Energy to drive National Electricity Market reforms and implement government policies promoting affordable, secure, and reliable electricity supply in the transition to net zero emissions. The Electricity Network Policy (ENP) branch focuses on the development of a fit for purpose electricity network as our electricity system transitions to renewables, identifying opportunities to optimise existing network infrastructure to minimise the need for expensive new projects, reduce consumer costs and support the government to deliver ambitious energy transition targets. We seek avenues to encourage innovation, address congestion and network black spots, facilitate the smart use of consumer energy resources and scale storage. We are also looking at ways to support a stable, reliable and safe grid during this rapid transformation of Australia's electricity system and identifying how our system planning processes may need to evolve. We want to ensure network regulation is fit for purpose in a renewables driven economy. The System Transformation team is responsible for developing policy and advice on how our system may need to evolve, and how to support a reliable and secure grid during this rapid transformation of Australia's electricity system. The key duties of the position include The policy you'll work on will contribute to transforming Australia's electricity system towards a low-carbon, renewable energy future. You will be working in a high-paced, dynamic and supportive environment. Use qualitative and quantitative information to understand trends and identify policy opportunities and risks in the energy system. Write clear and succinct analysis, briefs and policy advice, as we develop policy to respond to issues we find. Lead delivery of components of our teams' work, collaborating with colleagues from across the department and external stakeholders - including other government agencies, industry, market bodies, and consumer representatives. Lead a sub-team to design and deliver policy products and reform proposals to shape the direction of electricity policy. Anticipate, assess and advise on changes in Government policy, regulatory decisions, and general policy and regulatory issues. Work with a wide range of stakeholders including market bodies, industry, and state and territory governments. Prepare a range of written material including cabinet submissions, executive and Ministerial briefing papers, Ministerial correspondence and discussion papers, and develop new policy proposals as part of budget and regulatory processes. Desirable qualifications Tertiary qualifications in economics, public policy, finance, engineering or related disciplines would be useful, but are not a requirement.
