The opportunity Reporting to the Senior Manager, Infrastructure & Cloud, the Principal Cloud Engineer is a senior technical leader who will shape and drive our cloud strategy across the organization. You will be instrumental in designing, implementing, and optimizing cloud infrastructure and services that support mission-critical platforms for NSW citizens and agencies. Key Responsibilities of the role for Cloud Architecture & Strategy • Design and implement scalable, secure, and cost-effective cloud architectures (AWS, Azure, GCP). • Define cloud adoption strategies and migration roadmaps. • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend adoption paths. Infrastructure as Code & Automation • Lead development of infrastructure-as-code using tools like Terraform, CloudFormation • Automate deployment pipelines and cloud resource provisioning. Security & Compliance • Ensure cloud environments meet security best practices and compliance standards (e.g. ISO, ACSC Essential 8 Maturity Model, NIST, CIS and PCI-DSS frameworks.). • Collaborate with InfoSec teams to implement identity, access, and data protection controls. Performance & Cost Optimization • Monitor cloud performance and implement cost-saving strategies. •Work with FinOps to conduct regular reviews of cloud usage and recommend improvements. Team Leadership & Mentorship • Guide and mentor cloud engineers and DevOps teams. • Establish engineering best practices and promote a culture of innovation. Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement • Work closely with software architects, product managers, and business leaders. • Translate business requirements into technical cloud solutions. Required Skills & Qualifications • 6 years of experience in cloud engineering or infrastructure roles. • Deep expertise in at least one major cloud platform (AWS, Azure, GCP). • Strong proficiency in scripting and automation tools. • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, container orchestration (Kubernetes), and serverless architectures. • Solid understanding of networking, security, and cloud governance. • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
