Job Title Research Assistant Job Description An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Research Assistant to work with Dr. Sylvie Callegari and Prof. David Komander within the Ubiquitin Signalling Division. The team of Dr. Callegari within the Komander lab seeks to develop strategies to boost mitochondrial quality control in neurodegenerative disease. Important aspects of the work include the production of recombinant proteins, their biophysical and biochemical characterisation and the testing of chemical compounds and protein binders in biochemical and cellular systems. The ideal candidate will have experience in multiple aspects of protein biochemistry including cloning, recombinant protein expression and purification, biophysical methods (SPR, ITC, TR-FRET) and structural biology. Prior experience in insect expression systems and drug discovery is highly desirable. The role of the Research Assistant is to contribute to the research effort and further develop their research expertise through the pursuit of projects within defined research programs. This project will also require the Research Assistant to liase with WEHI’s core facilities, such as the Protein Production Facility and the Screening lab. Research Assistants are expected to be self-motivated and to operate under the general direction of the Laboratory Head/Team leader. The Research Assistant will contribute to a highly collaborative multi-disciplinary research effort involving multiple laboratories in the Ubiquitin Signalling Division. Selection Criteria Knowledge and skills A relevant Bachelor’s Degree (with Honours) qualification or equivalent Demonstrated broad range of protein biochemical skills (e.g. cloning, recombinant expression in bacteria, purification using AKTA systems) Experience with biophysical techniques including SPR, ITC, TR-FRET assays and structural biology A good academic or industrial record and achievements Demonstrated ability and potential for excellence and productivity in research Desirable Experience in drug discovery Experience in protein expression in other systems (insect cells) Experience in analysis of cultured cells (FACS, live cell imaging, Western Blotting) Personal qualities Ability to perform accurately and effectively, at times under pressure Adhere to timelines and defined flowchart procedures Adaptable and willing to learn new systems and procedures as required Work effectively within a team and individually Excellent interpersonal communication skills Strong multi-tasking, time management and organisational skills Accurate recording of results Terms of Appointment This position is available for 1 year in a full-time capacity. Salary is RSE 5.1-5.3 ($82,018 - $85,327). Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
