About the roles Markers We are seeking several seasonal casuals to work on the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) project in 2026. In this role, you will be working alongside like-minded teachers and professionals in assessing a range of writing responses from Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students. We offer flexibility to work onsite or from home, while providing support for you to successfully complete the marking of the NAPLAN Writing assessment. We have positions available for teachers currently residing in both metropolitan and regional New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Payrate: the payrate for centre-based markers is $56.28 per hour and home-based markers are $5.56 per script and $1.00 per blank script for marking. All markers are paid $56.28 per hour for training. Group Leaders and Professional Leaders As a Group Leader or Professional Leader, you will work in a vibrant environment amongst other professionals to ensure marking operations for NAPLAN runs smoothly. Group leaders will lead a team of 8 to 14 people throughout the marking operation. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing all matters relating to the marking of NAPLAN tests and work closely with the Professional Leaders and Test Centre Manager to ensure marking quality standards are achieved and maintained at all times. Payrate: the payrate is $67.68 per hour. Professional Leaders will act in the role of leading the marking operation on behalf of Pearson, ensuring quality levels and standards are kept and maintained at all times. Payrate: the payrate is $80.75 per hour. Responsibilities Attend and successfully complete relevant training and induction. Demonstrate competence in the online marking procedures and instructions. Complete all marking in accordance with training and rostered dates. Maintain the security and confidentiality of all assessment information and materials. Markers Mark candidate responses, at an item level, using the Pearson Online Marking System. Mark candidate responses of items accurately and in a timely manner in accordance with the marking criteria set by ACARA, the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and Pearson. Group Leaders Participate in the training of markers in a leadership role to ensure accurate and efficient marking of the writing responses. Assess the accuracy of the criteria application during the marking of writing tasks in accordance with the advice given by Professional Leaders, the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and Pearson. Monitor the performance of markers and assist in marker evaluations. Assist the Professional Leader in the administration of reliability samples. Provide professional assistance to markers during the marking period. Ensure accurate recording of all assessment information. Follow marking operation procedures. Professional Leader Professional Leader QA (Morning) Professional Leader QA (Evening) Requirements We require markers, group leaders and professional leaders to be available for the entire period of live marking, including training. Marking period: approximately four to six weeks. Training period: in the week of the 9th of March, 2026. Final dates to be advised. Marking will begin immediately after the training period and continue until approximately mid to late April. Accurately mark candidates’ work samples using the marking framework presented in training for writing. Receive ongoing support and instruction regarding the marking of NAPLAN writing as part of quality assurance protocols. Be able to work as part of a supportive team and have the ability to work in accordance with marking rate targets. Markers Centre-based markers are required to be available to work a five-day weekday shift (morning or evening), and one weekend shift (Saturday or Sunday) during the live marking period. Home-based markers are required to be online during a mandatory marking period and commit to undertake a minimum of four hours of marking daily, for six days a week during the live marking period. Group Leaders and Professional Leaders The Professional Leader QA Morning Shift is required to be available for the entire period of marking cycle, including; training, QA & Pairwise Marking. Group leaders and professional leaders are required to be available to work a five-day weekday shift (morning or evening), and one weekend shift (Saturday or Sunday) during the live marking period. Have good interpersonal skills and maintain a helpful, courteous, and professional manner at all times. Possess excellent communication skills – written and verbal. Be punctual, reliable and demonstrate excellent organisational skills. Have great attention to detail. Possess the ability to follow direction. Possess the ability to assume responsibility and act autonomously as required. Comfortable in a role that requires disciplinarian responsibilities. Have an approachable, enthusiastic, and personable attitude Please note our test centre and marking activities are not in operation during the Easter public holiday. Qualifications & experience Markers Have been teaching English in an Australian Primary or Secondary School for at least one year and hold at least a NESA Conditional or Provisional Accreditation. Have previously been a NAPLAN Marker or completed the NESA Learning Assessing writing using the NAPLAN writing marking guide – narrative or persuasive course. (Both free courses are available on the NESA Learning Page ). Have at least a Bachelor’s degree in teaching (we are also accepting applications from students studying a teaching degree in their final year from a reputable Australian institution). Be able to use a computer to conduct marking and complete appropriate training. Have an understanding of criterion-based marking (writing), grammar and structures. Group Leaders and Professional Leaders Have previous experience as a NAPLAN Marker, Group Leader or Professional Leader. Have current or recent experience in teaching (including recently retired, casual, on leave or currently employed teachers). Have a sound knowledge of grammar and its structures. Be able to use a computer to conduct marking and complete appropriate training.
