We’re seeking an experienced Legal Assistant / Paralegal (Family Law) to join their growing team. Role: Legal Assistant / Paralegal (Family Law) Location: Melbourne Employment type: Full-time Reporting to: Senior Family Lawyer / Practice Principal Key responsibilities Provide high-quality day-to-day support to family law solicitors: file management, document drafting, correspondence, court forms and affidavits. Prepare and lodge applications/affidavits with courts (Family Court, Federal Circuit & Family Court, or State Magistrates’ Courts where required). Conduct factual and documentary legal research and prepare concise briefs and chronology for matters. Assist with property and financial matter documentation including disclosure, asset schedules and financial statements. Support parenting matters: prepare parenting plans, consent orders, and materials for family dispute resolution where required. Manage client communication with empathy and clarity—keep clients updated and explain next steps in plain language. Maintain strict confidentiality and high standards of file organisation and billing/timekeeping. Liaise with external parties: barristers, experts, court registries and other professionals. Attend court and client meetings as required, and assist with trial or hearing preparation. Essential skills & experience Minimum 2–3 years’ experience as a legal assistant or paralegal in family law (or equivalent experience in related areas). Solid knowledge of family law procedures, court forms and timelines in Australia. Strong drafting skills and attention to detail; experience preparing affidavits, consent orders and disclosure documents. Excellent client-facing skills with empathy and professionalism when dealing with sensitive matters. Well-developed organisational and time-management skills; ability to manage a diverse workload and meet deadlines. Proficient in legal practice management software (e.g., Actionstep, LEAP, Smokeball or similar), MS Office and e-filing systems. Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively within a small specialist team. Desirable Tertiary qualifications in Paralegal Studies, Legal Practice or a related field. Experience with financial disclosure and property settlement matters. Previous experience in a boutique or specialist practice. Experience attending court and supporting hearings.
