About the team The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is the Australian Government's national measurement authority. We play an important role in the Australian economy. NMI does this by leading, maintaining and regulating Australia's measurement system. We deliver world-class measurement products, advice and client services and administer the regulatory framework for measurement. Our national measurement standards are recognised internationally. The Analytical Services Branch (ASB) consists of a team of over 100 staff based in North Ryde and Port Melbourne. We are responsible for conducting chemical and biological measurement on a wide range of samples (including water, soil, food and pharmaceuticals). Performing a diverse range of tests (including elements, nutrients, organic contaminants and microbiological parameters). We provide analytical solutions and technical expertise for a large set of private sector and government clients across the environmental, food and health sectors, enabling them to meet their business, research and regulatory compliance needs. We also work closely with the tertiary education sector in Australia and have a number of international stakeholders. The Laboratory Services (LS) team within ASB is a team of approximately 15 staff across two sites - North Ryde and Port Melbourne. The primary responsibility of LS is providing operational, technical and administrative support to the daily activities of the Analytical Services Branch, by receiving and processing incoming samples, liaising with stakeholders and ensuring sample processing is followed correctly from receipt to disposal. The opportunity We are excited to be offering a role based at Port Melbourne that will focus on laboratory services. Primary focusses are coordinating and supervising the accurate processing and delivery of samples to laboratories (Food & Health Chemistry, Food & Health Biological), ensuring good service delivery outcomes and operational process improvements. While this role is more of an administrative nature, a comprehensive scientific background and knowledge of laboratory operations is required. This Laboratory Services Sample Receipt Officer role is highly collaborative, engaging with staff across these laboratories and the associated support functions on this site. Our ideal candidate National Measurement Institute (NMI) is looking for a candidate with relevant experience in an accredited analytical laboratory environment. They will have demonstrated experience in sample management processes with a proven record of accurately completing tasks to assist the laboratories in delivering analytical results within the required turnaround times. The candidate will ideally have: Minimum Diploma in a scientific related field or at least 3 years of relevant work experience in a scientific field. Ability to successfully work under general supervision, demonstrating a high level of self-organisation and sound judgement in prioritising routine work and service matters. A demonstrated ability to provide excellent client and interpersonal communication skills (orally and written) in a professional manner. A high level of attention to detail and the ability to identify issues that my impact on own and teamwork outcomes. Demonstrated good working knowledge and experience of Sample Manager (LIMS) is highly desirable. An understanding of the requirements for samples under Biosecurity control including the handling and disposal of the samples. Training in Biosecurity Awareness and Approved Arrangements will be advantageous. A solid knowledge of the principles of Good Laboratory Practice and Laboratory Work Health & Safety are essential to this role. The key duties of the position include The main functions of this role for this position include: Under the general direction of the Sample Receipt Team leader conduct sample receipt and processing. Assist with outsourcing tasks and maintaining outsource records to enable tracking and traceability ensuring outsourcing is done in a timely and accurate manner. Liaise with clients and relevant laboratory areas to proactively address any potential issues and resolve enquiries ensuring a high standard of client satisfaction. Handling, processing and disposal of Biosecurity/Quarantine containment samples. Ensure safe work practices are followed and the receipt and outsource areas are kept clean and tidy. Assist with other Laboratory Services duties when required. This could include duties such as housekeeping, handling and storing of consumables received.
