Software Defined Wide Area Network (SD WAN) Engineer Location: Canberra, ACT Contract Duration: 12 months (with possible extensions of up to 36 months) Security Clearance: NV1 (minimum, must be active) About the Role An opportunity exists for an experienced Software Defined Wide Area Network (SD WAN) Engineer to join a government networks and monitoring team. You will be responsible for auditing, designing, deploying, and optimising SD WAN solutions across secure environments. The role requires strong technical expertise in SD WAN technologies, integration with enterprise-grade firewalls, and the ability to produce clear design and implementation documentation. Key Duties and Responsibilities Audit existing WAN architecture and connectivity. Define firewall placement strategies. Configure firewalls and SD WAN routing rules. Enable centralised policy management and validate policy enforcement/failover. Integrate firewall capabilities into SD WAN devices. Implement network segmentation enhancements. Provide technical contributions across network and gateway technologies (Juniper, Cisco, Trend Micro, F5, Clearswift, Fortigate, Zscaler, Runzero, DNS, DHCP, IPAM). Produce high-quality technical documentation. Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA) Alignment Systems Development – Network Design (NTDS): Level 5 Technology Management – IT Infrastructure (ITOP): Level 4 Technology Management – Network Support (NTAS): Level 5 Service Management – Change Control (CHMG): Level 4 Essential Criteria Minimum five years’ experience designing, deploying and managing SD WAN solutions. Hands-on experience integrating enterprise firewalls into complex SD WAN environments. Ability to articulate technical detail through design and implementation plans. Highly developed diagnostic and problem-solving skills. Strong teamwork and collaboration capabilities. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Desirable Criteria Broad understanding of industry direction and emerging technologies. Strong stakeholder management and client service skills. Understanding of ASD Essential 8 and experience supporting security accreditation of ICT systems. Experience with operations of highly secured networks and cryptography solutions. Additional Requirements Contractor stand-down period of approximately 4–6 weeks applies during December/January each year.
