An established defence technology company is looking to appoint a Senior Systems Engineer to its Sydney-based Information Technology function. Reporting directly to the Information Systems and Security Manager, this senior role will be central to building, scaling, and maintaining the IT environment that underpins the company’s growth in Australia and overseas. The successful candidate will be responsible for enhancing existing platforms, creating programmatic automations, and contributing to the global IT strategy. The position covers a broad scope including Microsoft 365, end-user computing, cloud environments, networking, and internal application hosting. It requires a hands-on engineer who can design solutions, troubleshoot complex issues, and mentor team members while setting standards for IT best practice. Key Responsibilities Deliver IT infrastructure projects, from planning and design through to implementation.Research new technologies, engage with vendors, and lead proof-of-concept initiatives.Identify trends in support requests and design scalable fixes to reduce recurring problems.Implement and support hardware, cloud, enterprise systems, and end-user solutions.Provide expertise in networking architecture and operations, including firewalls, VPNs, and routing.Automate workflows and processes to increase efficiency and reduce manual effort.Act as a subject matter expert across IT domains and provide technical leadership to peers.Collaborate with engineering and security functions to ensure IT solutions are secure and aligned with business needs.Define and implement global IT standards across the company’s international operations. Skills & Experience Degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.At least 7 years’ experience in IT infrastructure or systems engineering roles.Proven track record delivering IT projects in dynamic environments.Strong knowledge of Microsoft 365, Azure, and the broader Microsoft ecosystem.Advanced scripting and automation skills (PowerShell essential).Experience supporting OSX, Windows, and ideally Linux systems.Solid understanding of networking technologies and protocols (DNS, DHCP, VPNs, firewalls, routers, switches).Experience with AWS or Azure cloud infrastructure.Proficiency with endpoint management tools (Intune, SCCM, JAMF) and identity platforms (Azure EntraID).Familiarity with Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence).Strong problem-solving ability and excellent communication skills. Desirable Experience integrating SaaS applications and managing hybrid environments.Familiarity with Essential 8, ISO 27001, ISM, or NIST 800-53 frameworks.Exposure to AI/LLM-driven automation tools.Background working with security teams to implement technical controls.Systems-thinking approach with the ability to design scalable global IT solutions.
