A leading defence technology company is seeking a Head of IT Systems to oversee and advance its IT function in Sydney. This leadership role will be central to shaping the company’s IT strategy, managing a growing team, and ensuring the infrastructure and services scale with rapid business growth. The successful candidate will combine technical expertise with strong leadership skills. They will be responsible for managing projects, mentoring staff, and implementing modern processes and automations to maximise efficiency. This is a hands-on role covering disciplines such as Microsoft 365, networking, cloud infrastructure, endpoint management, and internal applications, with a strong focus on improving user experience for engineers across the organisation. Key ResponsibilitiesDefine and execute the IT strategy for the next phase of company growth.Lead, mentor, and expand the IT team, setting clear goals and performance standards.Deliver IT infrastructure projects and strategic initiatives from planning to execution.Build and maintain IT hardware, cloud, enterprise systems, and end-user solutions.Drive continual improvement through automation and process enhancements.Analyse support patterns and implement proactive measures to reduce recurring issues.Provide technical guidance across IT domains and act as a subject matter expert.Collaborate closely with Security and Engineering teams to align IT solutions with business needs.Establish global IT standards across the organisation’s international operations. Skills & ExperienceBachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent experience.Minimum 8 years’ experience in IT leadership, infrastructure, or systems engineering roles.Proven track record managing and developing IT teams.Strong hands-on technical background with the ability to troubleshoot complex issues.Expertise in Microsoft 365, EntraID, Azure, and the broader Microsoft ecosystem.Advanced scripting and automation skills (PowerShell essential).Proficiency with OSX, Windows, and preferably Linux.Strong networking knowledge including firewalls, VPNs, routers, switches, DNS, DHCP, and spanning tree.Experience with AWS or Azure cloud infrastructure.Endpoint management experience (Intune, SCCM, JAMF) and identity management.Proficiency with Atlassian suite (Jira, Confluence).Strong communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly. DesirableFamiliarity with Essential 8, ISO 27001, ISM, or NIST 800-53 standards.Experience collaborating with Security teams and implementing technical controls.Integration and management of SaaS services.Interest in leveraging AI and LLM technologies to improve automation.Systems thinking approach to designing scalable, global IT solutions.
