Who we are The Gas and Liquid Fuels Division provides policy advice and delivers policy reforms and programs that underpin the reliable and affordable supply of gas and liquid fuel. Australia's liquid fuel supplies are essential for the nation's security and underpin the operation of our economy. The Division works to ensure liquid fuel can be reliably delivered to support Australia's growing economy and essential services as we transition to net zero emissions. The Division works to maintain our domestic refining capability, build our domestic fuel reserves, return Australia to compliance with our International Energy Agency (IEA) membership obligations, increase our emergency preparedness, bring forward improvements to fuel quality, and maintain security of critical inputs to our transport energy system such as Diesel Exhaust Fluid. We identify and facilitate opportunities to support the fuel market transition and enhance Australia's energy security. The Liquid Fuels Security and Strategy Branch works across government to develop and deliver strategic policy, programs, laws and other governance arrangements to support liquid fuel security and energy transition. The National Fuel Security Team plays a central role in safeguarding Australia's access to reliable, affordable, and equitable liquid fuels as the nation transitions to a net zero emissions future. Operating within the Liquid Fuel Security and Strategy Branch, the team leads the delivery of the National Fuel Security work program and coordinates the branch's engagement on national security issues. We work across government and industry to monitor and strengthen fuel resilience, support legislative reform, and drive strategic stakeholder engagement-including with Defence, DFAT, and critical infrastructure sectors. The key duties of the position include The job Lead and contribute to policy development by researching, analysing, and drafting advice on liquid fuel security, energy transition, and related national security issues. Prepare high-quality written materials, including Cabinet submissions, ministerial briefs, and policy papers, ensuring complex issues are communicated clearly to non-expert audiences. Interpret and apply legislation, policy, and regulatory frameworks to inform advice and ensure compliance with government objectives. Monitor and analyse energy markets to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for reform. Identify and raise issues, risks, and opportunities for improvement, using critical thinking and sound judgment to provide evidence-based recommendations. Build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships, liaising with internal and external partners, including government agencies, industry, and critical infrastructure sectors. Contribute to a positive team culture, sharing knowledge, mentoring colleagues, and supporting collaborative problem-solving. Desirable qualifications Tertiary qualifications in public policy, economics, law, international relations, energy, or a related discipline.
