About the role The Chief Financial Officer leads the Finance functions and oversees external payroll for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Reporting to the Chief Executive, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) delivers efficient, fiscally responsible, and best-practice oriented financial services across the organisation. The role provides strategic financial advice to the Board, Finance Committee, and senior management, managing key relationships with regulatory authorities, funding bodies including Creative Australia and Creative Victoria, and industry stakeholders. The CFO manages the annual budget cycle, oversees statutory audit processes, and implements robust financial management systems. Leading a small team of finance professionals, the CFO ensures compliance, drives risk management, and provides timely financial reporting and analysis to support evidence-based decision-making. About you CA or CPA qualified, you are an experienced CFO or commercially orientated Financial Controller from a complex, fast-paced organisation. Your demonstrated leadership includes strategic knowledge across payroll, taxation, budget management, compliance and reporting functions. You possess excellent communication skills and commercial acumen, with the ability to contextualise financial matters within broader strategic considerations. Experience at a senior level within both commercial and publicly funded organisations would be advantageous, along with the confidence and maturity to act as an ambassador for the organisation while managing sophisticated stakeholder relationships.
