About the Role The Specialist Family Worker is a vital member of The Salvation Army’s ACT Central Intake Service (CIS) team, providing trauma-informed, culturally responsive support to families and children experiencing hardship, housing instability, and complex disadvantage. Working within a strengths-based and child-safe framework, you will deliver early intervention, targeted assessments, and short-term case coordination to help families stabilise risk factors and connect with essential services. Your role includes collaboration with parents, carers, children, and sector partners such as Child and Youth Protection Services, Child and Family Centres, and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs). How you will make an impact Conduct trauma-informed, holistic assessments focusing on family safety, wellbeing, housing stability, and child development. Deliver targeted short-term case coordination, crisis response, and brief interventions for families with complex needs. Co-design culturally relevant action plans with families, facilitating referrals to appropriate long-term supports. Support parents and carers to build protective factors and reduce risk of statutory intervention. Maintain timely, accurate records in SAMIS/SHIP in accordance with privacy and safeguarding standards. Build and maintain strong partnerships across child, youth, and family services, including schools, ACCOs, and family violence supports. Participate in care team meetings to ensure coordinated, wrap-around services for families. Support referral pathways across mental health, family violence, parenting, and education sectors. Contribute to sector reforms and pilot initiatives focused on family and child wellbeing. Stay current with best practices in family support, trauma recovery, and culturally safe service delivery. Engage in supervision, reflective practice, case reviews, and professional development. Share insights and contribute to team learning and service improvements. Participate in training delivered by TSA’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Inclusive Practices teams. Foster a collaborative, inclusive team culture grounded in TSA values of integrity, respect, compassion, and accountability. Work closely with Intake and Senior Case Workers to ensure seamless family-focused service delivery. Support the implementation of the Doorways Model of Care and ACT Shared Practice Framework across the CIS. What you will bring Diploma in Social Work, Community Services, Youth Work, Family Support, or related field; or equivalent demonstrated experience. Minimum 1 year case management or short-term coordination experience within family support, early intervention, or community settings. Strong understanding of trauma impacts, family dynamics, child development, and structural disadvantage. Experience delivering culturally safe services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and CALD families. Knowledge of mandatory reporting, child safeguarding, and ethical practice standards. Excellent communication skills—empathetic listener, clear verbal communicator, and concise writer of case notes and reports. Ability to prioritise competing demands and exercise sound judgement in high-risk situations. Desirable: Proficiency in languages other than English. Familiarity with ACT family service networks and child protection pathways. Experience with SAMIS, SHIP, or other case management systems. Lived experience or strong understanding of intergenerational disadvantage and community healing. What We Offer Salary packaging up to $15,900 tax free $2,650 meal entertainment benefit.
