Description As the Environment and Sustainability Manager, you will be a high performing environment and sustainability professional who will drive real change working with Social Infrastructure and Integrated Facilities & Asset Management across Australia and New Zealand. You will be a passionate and strategic Environment and Sustainability Manager to lead our sustainability efforts across our Social Infrastructure and Citizen Services Business Unit. As a key leader, reporting to the Social Infrastructure and Citizen Services Business (SICS), Executive General Manager Finance with a functional reporting line to the Group General Manager Environment and Sustainability (Operations), you will shape the environment and sustainability strategy for our SICS business. You will influence executive decisions, lead a high-performing team of five, and ensure our projects meet and exceed compliance and sustainability benchmarks. This position can be based in Brisbane, Melbourne, or Sydney. Key responsibilities: Provide environment and sustainability leadership to the SICS business. Manage and provide oversight of the environment and sustainability compliance obligations for the Business Unit including advice and support for the delivery of projects/ contracts. Lead and manage a team of environment and sustainability professionals to support operations in delivering services that meet customer needs. Work closely with the Business Unit Leadership team in identifying resource needs to adequately manage Downers risks and meet customer expectations. Identify and implement continual improvement opportunities to provide sustainable, industry-leading solutions that enhance overall environment and sustainability performance. Coordinate sustainability data, including data uploads and data quality of Downer’s Envizi platform. Prioritise and promote initiatives to drive efficiencies and performance while reducing costs. Participate in ISO 14001 surveillance and certification audits and respond to external/ client-end audits, as well as lead internal environment and sustainability audits. Lead responses to environmental regulatory compliance actions e.g. environmental notices. Conduct assurance and auditing processes for monthly sustainability reporting (energy, GHG emissions, waste, water). Promote cross-business networking, sharing of lessons learned, and continuous improvement activities. Lead and coordinate work winning responses (including identification of high risk/opportunity, approvals, and project costings) for tenders related to the business. Lead BU Decarbonisation Working Group and support implementation of Climate Change and Decarbonisation Plan. About You: You are a strategic and solutions-focused environment and sustainability leader who thrives in complex settings and drives real impact. Confident, positive, influential, and collaborative, you lead with purpose, engage stakeholders, and champion continuous improvement. You will also bring with you: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Environmental Management, Sustainability, or a related field Demonstrated expertise in environment and sustainability management. Strong operational knowledge of environment and sustainability practices across Australia and New Zealand. In-depth understanding of environment and sustainability risks associated with complex projects and contracts, particularly in facilities/ asset management sector. Demonstrated experience in the use of sustainability data and reporting solutions. Experience using the IBM Envizi solution is desirable. Comprehensive knowledge of Australian environment and planning laws, with expertise in at least one state and experience managing multiple approvals simultaneously. Proven ability to influence stakeholders at all levels, including staff and senior managers. Strong strategic, business, and financial acumen.
