Australia is regularly affected by severe weather events. These events are growing in frequency and severity, leading to increased economic impact, vulnerability and potential magnitude of harm. To address this, the Bureau of Meteorology is undertaking significant steps to deliver a more customer focussed, integrated and resilient national operation within the Community Services Group (CSG) CSG is comprised of three programs, National Production Services (NPS), Environmental Prediction Services and Decision Support Services. The advertised role sits within NPS, a Program that operates with a national capability to lead and coordinate national forecast and warning services. It delivers a 24/7 integrated capability across Melbourne and Brisbane as a nationally resilient operation. The National Production Senior Meteorologist will report into the National Production Operations Leader. This role involves shift work, and primary outputs include leading the provision of national forecasts, warnings and guidance, situational awareness and operational response products and services. To be successful in this role, you will have a comprehensive understanding of the impacts of the evolving weather, flood, ocean and climate landscapes. You will require a thorough understanding of meteorology with a complementary foundational knowledge (or capacity to develop) in hydrology, oceanography and climatology. In this role you will help consolidate the Bureau's NPS capability. A people centred leader, you will provide leadership and technical excellence to a team that continues to evolve the Bureau's national forecast processes, aligning effort towards delivering maximum impact and value for all of Australia. The key duties of the position include The responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to: Connecting seamlessly with all parts of the Bureau's national operations, the National Production Senior Meteorologist will work with the NP Operations Lead to manage a high performing team that delivers outstanding products and services. As part of a 24/7 shift working team maintaining an awareness of the national weather, ensuring forecasting products and processes consistently deliver impact and value for our customers, partners and government stakeholders. Particular areas of role focus include but are not limited to, leading routine Public Weather (forecast and warnings) services, Tsunami operations, leading daily grid and text intervention strategies and actively contributing to the National Weather Outlook and required national staffing levels. Confidently leading a geographically distributed team across Melbourne and Brisbane. Providing proactive advice for incident escalation, management and weather event response functions. Demonstrating resilience to excel in high pressure, complex and dynamic operating environments, particularly during significant weather events. Ensuring appropriate meteorological data and guidance material is developed and made available to media platforms and our customers, within agreed timeframes. This extends to participating in direct radio broadcasts, social media posts and media interviews, primarily when the Community Engagement cohort are not on duty. Maintaining and leading consistent collaboration with your peers across EPS, NPS, DSS, Business Solutions Group and the wider Bureau to contribute to the ongoing delivery of the Bureau's strategic direction. Taking responsibility for your ongoing professional development, including actively mentoring colleagues in positively progressing their professional development.
