Infrastructure Engineers are responsible for implementing, managing, and decommissioning infrastructure—including physical, virtual, networking, and cloud systems—that underpin digital services. The Senior Gateway Engineer applies advanced expertise in specific ICT platforms to provide specialist advice on their management and maintenance. They collaborate with key third-party suppliers to ensure the delivery of a reliable and resilient gateway infrastructure, while also engaging with architecture and shared services teams to maintain the security and integrity of daily technical operations. Senior Gateway Engineers operate with a high degree of autonomy, making decisions that rely heavily on their professional judgement and awareness of broader organisational impacts. Their work is carried out under the general direction of senior leadership, but with substantial independence in execution. Key duties and responsibilities Duties may include some or all the following but not limited to: Design/evaluate/implement infrastructure requirements to meet future infrastructure demand Provide expert technical support for project build, test and solution deployment activities Prepare, review and maintain documentation which may include design documentation, implementation plans, test plans, and support procedures Assist in the development and implementation of strategies, operational policy and procedures and change initiatives Participate in change management process and communicate the end-to-end implications of configuration changes Provide detailed, specialist technical advice, including strategic advice to the senior executive Proactively share knowledge and expertise as the subject matter expert, and aid and mentorship to less experienced colleagues Undertake research on emerging technologies and provide recommendations on product suitability for the agency Engage and partner with other agencies and service providers to build service delivery capability Attend interagency meetings and forums to influence business outcomes and share information Encourage innovation, continuous improvement and manage and support change and influence and contribute to ICT strategy resolving conflicts as needed Manage the operation of backup, high availability and disaster recovery solutions for IT systems Manage the regular maintenance of patches and support packages for all technical layers Manage the administration and operation of the Gateway network kit Knowledge/Qualifications : At least five (5) years demonstrated experience in the design, management and maintenance of internet gateway and/or large scale data centre networking environment. Demonstrated experience and technical proficiency in the design of services utilising F5/Blue Coat Layer 4-7 switching/load balancing and proxy systems. Demonstrated experience in the design and deployment of network infrastructure including Cisco Data centre technologies like Cisco ACI, Cisco Routers, nexus switches, routing protocols like BGP, OSPF, EIGRP Demonstrated experience with and/or detailed understanding of Palo Alto firewalls and IPS Solutions Demonstrated experience in the design and implementation of VPN technologies, email and DNS (Infoblox) Solutions. Demonstrated experience in the design and integration of hybrid and public cloud services. Demonstrated experience in the development and maintenance of system architecture and design documentation. Demonstrated experience with or knowledge of Australian Government information security policies, the ASD Information Security Manual and Essential Eight.
