Surgical cut-up (or dissection) has traditionally been the domain of the pathologist and pathology registrar, but now it has evolved into a new and exciting career path for scientists. DHM Pathology has developed a complete training program covering eight grades, which has grown into a team of more than 40 surgical scientists. We work in a modern bespoke facility and are an integral part of the diagnostic process. Ideal candidate The position available is for a Surgical Scientist (grade 1), with either a Bachelor of Medical Science degree or a TAFE Pathology diploma. Shifts: Monday to Friday, 4–12 pm, and 5 pm–1 am, on rotation. As part of your training, you will learn safe bench technique and cutting skills, how to describe specimens and lesions, how to best sample them and provide all of the information required to give the pathologist the best chance of diagnosing each patient. You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you have directly contributed to the welfare of the patient and you will constantly learn from each experience. Successful applicants will show a keen interest in pathology and have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. You will have a mature outlook and a positive disposition, along with a common-sense approach to problem solving. As it is an evening position, you will need your own transport.
