AEMO’s System Design division is responsible for planning the power system in the context of unprecedented transformation. The rapid transition to renewable energy generation and electrification of many sectors (transport, industry etc) has seen sharp rises in proposed transmission connection projects. The Onboarding and Connections Group manages AEMO’s end to end process for connecting and registering generators into the National Electricity Market. About The Role With over 160 GW of new generation expected in the next 30 years, you'll play a key role in connecting onshore and offshore wind, solar, hydro, batteries, and hydrogen projects to the NEM. Reporting to the Team Lead – Onboarding and Connections, you'll: Act as the technical lead on small to medium projects, leading power system modelling and aligning new generators with NEM requirements Solve shared power system and market challenges alongside industry Drive improvements to streamline the connections process. You'll work with a wide range of stakeholders—from developers, investors, and consultants to regulators, equipment providers, and government—and gain opportunities to visit project sites, grow your network, and represent AEMO at industry forums. This role can be based in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide or Perth , with flexible working supported by strong team culture and communication tools. You’ll also mentor junior team members and contribute to shaping Australia’s energy transition. What You Will Be Doing Lead small to medium connection projects from initiation through to full output operation. Provide expert technical advice and problem-solving on performance standards, stability, system strength, registration, and commissioning. Strengthen technical collaboration with clients and industry, ensuring issues are resolved constructively with a focus on outcomes. Support regulatory change and contribute to AEMO’s strategic vision for integrating diverse generation and storage technologies. Mentor staff and engage stakeholders through clear, high-quality communication, building AEMO’s reputation as a trusted partner. What You Will Bring To The Role Education Relevant tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or other discipline relevant to power systems analysis. Experience, Knowledge, And Capabilities Solid experience in power systems analysis, with a degree in Electrical Engineering or related field. Proven ability to lead technical teams and deliver small to medium projects with a pragmatic, service-oriented approach. Strong expertise in generator connections, including performance assessment and issue resolution. Skilled in negotiating complex technical issues across diverse stakeholders with competing priorities. Sound understanding of commercial, legal, and regulatory drivers in large-scale infrastructure and generation projects. Excellent communicator with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
