The Director of National Parks (the Director) is responsible for six national parks, the Australian National Botanic Gardens, 58 Australian Marine Parks and the Heard Island and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. Parks Australia is the federal park agency that supports the Director, and they are a division of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (the Department). Australia has one of the largest networks of marine parks in the world. Marine parks protect the diversity of life in our oceans-from astonishing coral reefs in our tropical seas to deep ocean canyons and undersea mountains in temperate marine regions. This branch oversees the ongoing management of each of the six Marine Park Networks, Policy and Programs Coordination, Science and Management Effectiveness and Authorisations and Compliance. Pulu Keeling National Park is located in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean about halfway between Australia and Sri Lanka. Covering 2600 hectares of land and sea, the park encompasses the whole of North Keeling Island as well as the surrounding waters. Parks Australia leases the area from the Cocos-Malay community and manages it as a Commonwealth Reserve under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). Pulu Keeling National Park sits within the Cocos (Keeling) Marine Park which covers an area of 467,054 square kilometres. The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are a group of 27 tropical low-lying coral islands surrounded by the clear turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. The marine environment includes coral, lagoon and deep-sea habitats and species, with several habitats and species of international conservation significance, including green turtles and hybrid varieties of reef fish. The job With limited direction, you will be responsible for managing Pulu Keeling National Park and Cocos (Keeling) Islands Marine Park, in accordance with the lease agreement between the Director of National Parks and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands Shire Council for North Keeling Island, park management plans and the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). This will include: Developing, planning and reviewing natural, cultural and visitor management and community engagement programs for island and marine areas. Coordinating the implementation of island and marine field operations, including for habitat and native and invasive species monitoring and management. Effectively managing allocated finances, assets and infrastructure. Procurement and project management. Leading, training and mentoring a small team of staff and volunteers, including addressing Parks Australia's Work Health and Safety requirements in support of a safe work environment. Preparing a range of documents including plans, reports and technical papers, as well as interpreting monitoring data and scientific studies and contributing to scientific papers. Exercise compliance and enforcement duties under the EPBC Act (1999) and Regulations (2000). Representing Parks Australia to collaborate and develop productive relationships with the local community, researchers and Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands and other government agencies. This includes coordinating local advisory panels/committees. Engaging closely and working with other areas of the Marine and Island Parks Branch and Parks Australia. Undertake other duties as directed to manage Pulu Keeling National Park and Cocos (Keeling) Islands Marine Park and contribute to wider Parks Australia activities.
