About the Role The Principal Advisor – Work Health and Safety (WHS) supports the General Manager – WHS in the implementation of the Queensland Work Health and Safety Act 2011, the Electrical Safety Act 2002, their Regulations and relevant Standards and Codes of Practice. This role ensures the Safety Management System meets legal, contractual, and business requirements, while driving continuous improvement and a safety-focused culture. The Principal Advisor will lead and support safety, risk, and compliance activities across the WHS function. The role works in partnership with the Advisor – Recover@Work to assist in effective management of early intervention and injury prevention across WMQ. Reporting to the General Manager – WHS and leading a small team, it is both strategic and tactical guiding the development and embedding of safety as a core value by uplifting knowledge, ownership and engagement in WHS – both physical and psychosocial. This role collaborates across all levels of the organisation to create best practice and to ensure and foster a culture where safety and wellbeing are integral to daily operations. Key Role Accountabilities: Influence culture and practice to ensure proactive safety management is integrated throughout the organisation. Support the implementation and continuous improvement of the WMQ risk management framework and supporting governance frameworks so it is relevant to the internal and external environment within which WMQ operates and is consistently applied across the organisation. Work with the General Manager – WHS to provide expert support and guidance to services to enable them to manage safety risks. Direct management and supervision of WHS Advisors, providing leadership through mentoring, coaching support and operational direction. Coordinate the hazard and incident reporting process, identifying and adapting risk management tools and methodologies to meet business needs and escalate risks to the General Manager – WHS and Director – Governance, Performance and Outcomes. Analyse incident reports to identify trends and system issues. Lead the development and implementation of work health and safety audits within the strategic Internal Audit program. Effectively design, deliver and/or evaluate safety training programs, research safety challenges and solutions and evaluate their effectiveness. Contribute to an effective investigation program that allows WMQ to understand factors that contribute to hazards and incidents. Assist in maintaining WHS policies and procedures in line with the Quality Framework and applicable legislative frameworks. Use high level relationship management and negotiation skills including the ability to manage the needs of multiple stakeholders. About You Degree or Post Graduate qualification in WHS or related risk management discipline. Comprehensive working knowledge of the current legislation, advisory standards in WHS and proven ability in their application. Five years’ experience in work health and safety. Experience in leading safety auditing, risk management and performance metrics and extensive ability to utilise systems to interpret and analyse data. Effective leadership skills and ability to develop the capabilities of others. Demonstrated strategic, operational and analytical thinking. Project management expertise with ability to plan and implement work health and safety initiatives Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to deliver projects and programs, work in a team environment, complete work within deadlines and with limited supervision. Proven ability to influence across multidisciplinary teams and facilitate change management. Excellent communication, networking and stakeholder management skills including the ability to develop training, communication and digital resources. Desirable: Professional membership of relevant industry groups or associations. PowerBI experience. Working knowledge of human-resources processes compliant with legislation.
