Our organisation The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) is the Australian Government's primary authority on radiation protection and nuclear safety. Our purpose is to protect the Australian people and the environment from the harmful effects of radiation, through understanding risks, best practice regulation, research, policy, services, partnerships and engaging with the community. Section overview The Medical Radiation Services Branch is comprised of three sections: the Primary Standards Dosimetry Laboratory, the Australian Clinical Dosimetry Service, and Medical Imaging. The Medical Imaging section provides advice and services that underpin national radiation safety in diagnostic imaging. The section runs the National Diagnostic Reference Level Service, which collects data on radiation doses in common imaging procedures and sets national benchmarks against which facilities can compare their practice. The section also develops educational material, provides advice, provides calibration and measurement services related to diagnostic imaging, conducts research into patient dose, contributes to national codes and safety guides, and promotes optimal use of ionising radiation in diagnostic imaging.
