Over the past 32 years, CYLC has successfully pursued the recognition of Aboriginal land rights and native title and led innovative reform on the Cape. This includes supporting native title groups to engage in negotiations with various stakeholders, implement comprehensive Traditional Owner-led agreements, build strong Aboriginal nations through the establishment of prescribed bodies corporates. CYLC is seeking talented and motivated Legal Officers to fill vacancies in the Native Title Unit and the Prescribed Bodies Corporate (PBC) Unit in Cairns. Legal Officer, Native Title Unit As a Legal Officer (NTU), you will report to the Principal Legal Officer to deliver legal services in accordance with the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), as part of the Cape York United 1 Native Title Claim, upcoming sea claims and future act matters. You will facilitate agreement making between Traditional Owners, government and other stakeholders, involving commercial complexity to provide funding streams and grants of tenure to Traditional Owners. Legal Officer, PBC Unit As a Legal Officer in the PBC Unit, you will be responsible for providing comprehensive legal services to PBCs relating to corporate governance and compliance in accordance with the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), Aboriginal Land Act 1991 (Qld), Native Title (Prescribed Bodies Corporate) Regulations 1999 (Cth) and Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (Cth). The successful applicant will possess the following qualifications and professional experience: A minimum of 2 years of post-admission experience but we will consider interest from exceptional graduates who demonstrate a strong interest in this sector. Eligibility to hold a practicing certificate in Queensland. Exemplary written and verbal communication skills, with a focus on attention to detail. Relationship building skills with clients and stakeholders, preferably in cross-cultural settings. Demonstrated ability to work in a high-pressure environment while managing competing priorities Excellent time management and organisational skills. The ability to undertake regular travel throughout Cape York. Experience in native title, property and/or commercial law is highly desirable.
