About us The Department of Government Services (DGS) was established on 1 January 2023 to improve everyone's experience of doing business and interacting with the Victorian government. About the role Senior Solicitors within the CAV Legal team provide legal support across CAV, but primarily to the Regulatory Services Division. That support is provided through the provision of specialist legal advice to investigators prior to and during the course of investigations, preparation of legal briefs and materials to assist in the successful prosecution of defendants and by appearing and conducting litigation in all jurisdictions, including the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, Magistrates' Court of Victoria, County Court of Victoria and the Supreme Court of Victoria as well as the Federal Court of Australia. The position also takes a leadership role in project teams conducting sensitive and complex investigations and other compliance and enforcement activities. Reporting to Managing Principal Solicitors, Senior Solicitors play a key role in successfully enforceing Australian and Victorian consumer law. Uses broad understanding of procurement and finance concepts to inform expenditure decisions and manage risks. Technical expertise Demonstrated experience in prosecuting/litigating complex and sensitive criminal and civil law cases in a range of jurisdictions. Experience managing legal work in a complex environment including liaison with investigators and other state and federal bodies. Experience in supporting investigations and in the preparation of and appearances in civil and criminal litigation in complex matters. Experience as a solicitor advocate appearing in both criminal, civil, State and Federal jurisdictions. Experience in directing legal research and demonstrated ability to develop and direct innovative responses to new and emerging issues Mandatory requirements To be admitted to practice as an Australian lawyer and eligible to hold an unconditional Victorian practising certificate. You will be asked to provide evidence of this requirement. Desirable requirements The applicant is expected to be available to work from Service Victoria Offices. Key accountabilities Assist CAV Legal with the provision of legal services to the Regulatory Services Division. Appear before superior Victorian Courts and Tribunals on behalf of the Director of Consumer Affairs Victoria. Conduct proceedings arising out of contraventions of legislation administered by Consumer Affairs Victoria. Provide accurate, timely, high level legal analysis, advice, comment and opinion in respect of legislation administered by CAV. As required, manage and lead project teams responsible for conducting sensitive, complex investigations and other compliance and enforcement activities including legal policy and processes. Produce authoritative advice and provide assistance to staff across Regulatory Services Division in relation to the preparation and conduct of investigations. Provide high level written and oral advice to members of CAV on matters arising in the course of their duties. For specific responsibilities please review the attached position description.
