Job Summary: This role will be leading the strategic and tactical development and performance of the Property portfolio in Allied World’s newly established Melbourne, Australia office in line with the agreed business strategy and performance targets. You will spend the majority of your time building a Property portfolio by liaising with brokers and clients and implementing the agreed underwriting strategy, contributing to marketing and business development activities and providing technical knowledge and expertise. You will deal with customers and third parties on a one to one basis, although you will also work with other colleagues and be part of a team. You will use your strong strategic thinking, planning and relationship management skills to take a strategic view across and make commercial decisions regarding your allocated portfolio. Job Duties: Lead the implementation of the underwriting strategy for Australia in Melbourne by applying the associated risk appetite, underwriting philosophy and pricing strategy, in order to achieve the agreed business strategy and targets Assist with managing the performance of the Melbourne property portfolio through compliance controls, accumulation monitoring, performance monitoring, cycle management and portfolio forecasting to ensure agreed targets and standards are met Assist with ensuring the long-term development of the Melbourne office’s property portfolio through market intelligence, legal developments and emerging risks Where necessary, liaise with facultative reinsurers and/or internal reinsurance teams to achieve the desired levels of cover on appropriate commercial terms and/or exploit appropriate reinsurer capacity to maximise profitable portfolio growth Deliver underwriting decisions which follow the agreed processes at the designated authority level, in order to secure profitable business within the agreed risk appetite Provide expert advice, guidance and coaching to less qualified and/or experienced colleagues to address technical referrals and raise standards and expertise across the technical community Lead and/or contribute to technical audits and peer review processes as required to support and enable the maintenance of an effective control environment Ensure the internal systems and processes are in place and working effectively to support the business needs Qualifications, Skills and Experience: Significant experience in underwriting a range of Property risks in the Australian market with specific Melbourne market experience a preference Strong leadership and people management skills Excellent business development skills and established rapport with local network Thorough technical understanding of Property insurance including but not limited to clauses, policy wordings and pricing tools used in the Property market Thorough understanding of the broker network with good business planning skills Strong negotiation skills with a high level of customer and commercial awareness Excellent verbal and written English Competent in Microsoft Office and relevant software packages / insurance platforms Willingness to travel overseas as required Working at Allied World Our team of over 1,500 professionals has deep expertise in the industry.
