About the Opportunity The Counsellor/Educator plays a critical role in the delivery of community-based alcohol and other drug (AOD) services. The role is responsible for providing therapeutic counselling, group education, and psychoeducation to individuals and families affected by substance use. The Counsellor/Educator works collaboratively with clients to support behaviour change, promote harm reduction, and improve health and social outcomes. Requirements of the Role: Provide screening / assessment, counselling, education, support, advocacy, case management, and where appropriate referrals to other agencies to meet the client’s goals. Provide brief interventions, psychoeducation, or referrals to specialist alcohol and drug treatment services. Support client engagement and retention in treatment through follow-up, outreach, and coordination. With the client, develop a recovery plan and review the effectiveness of the plan and measure the client’s progress towards their goals. Provide respectful support and effective interventions for people who experience mental health concerns or mental illness as well as problems related to AOD use. Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records, and actively participate in quality audits, including data validation and review. Provide progress reports to referring agencies, practitioners, and funding bodies. Participate in community prevention activities, interagency and service coordination meetings. About you: Tertiary qualification in Psychology, Social Work, Counselling, Alcohol and Other Drugs, or a related field. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage clients from diverse backgrounds in a non-judgmental and culturally safe manner. Experience in facilitating group education or therapeutic programs. Understanding of co-occurring issues such as mental health, trauma, and social disadvantage. Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Demonstrated experience providing counselling or therapeutic support to individuals with alcohol and drug use issues. Well-developed administrative and computer skills. Experience in case management, and client record management. Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with a diverse range of people and professionals and manage difficult situations. An understanding of and commitment to working within professional boundaries and client confidentiality. Ability and capacity to travel to deliver outreach services, which will include overnight stays depending on distance. Desirable Criteria A broad understanding of the challenges and experiences of people in regional Australia. Knowledge of Diversion and Prevention work. Knowledge of the physical, mental, legal, and social impacts of alcohol and other drugs. Sound knowledge of harm reduction practices. Appointments will be subject to Australian residency/visa, satisfactory National Police check (within 3 months), Working With Children card, Current C or A class driver's license, First Aid Certificate, and suitable work referees.
