Katherine West Health Board. Katherine West Health Board (KWHB) is currently looking for a Strong Beginnings for Strong Families, Cultural Support and Liaison Officer ( SB4SF). This is an identified position for a Ngumbin/Yapa person from the KWHB region ,who has an understanding of Aboriginal cultural values, and commitment to the advancement and self-determination of Aboriginal communities. Established in 1998, Katherine West Health Board is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation that provides a range of clinical, preventative and public health services to clients in the Katherine West Region of the Northern Territory. With four major health care centres and a range of satellite centres, KWHB services an area over two times the size of Tasmania (162,000km²), helping to improve the health and wellbeing of some of the most remote communities in Australia. Position Description About the Opportunity The SB4SF role has important responsibilities in supporting Ngumbin/Yapa clients to travel and access hospital and specialist care through the Patient Assistance Travel Scheme (PATS) and is an essential conduit between KWHB clients and PATS administrators/ stakeholders. This role is an identified Ngumbin/Yapa position because of the essential need for local KWHB cultural knowledge and language skills. Responsibilities will include (but not limited to): Provide culturally safe support to antenatal clients who travel to Katherine for birthing, ensuring their physical, emotional, and cultural needs are respected and met while away from community. Act as the main conduit between KWHB clients and PATS to improve client access to specialist and hospital health care. Advocate for clients’ rights and preferences during their hospital care, helping navigate systems and reducing barriers to respectful, safe, and responsive maternity services. Participate in case conferences and provide cultural guidance to PHC team members, with an emphasis on child and maternal health clients and case conferences. Support population health activities and events across the region to improve community knowledge about family, maternal and child health and wellbeing.
