THE OPPORTUNITY Research Fellows are members of Garvan’s Faculty who demonstrate emerging capacity for independent, world class research leadership. They lead independent research groups and manage an independent research program that contributes to one or more of Garvan’s Strategic Programs, reporting directly to Program Directors. Appointment to Research Fellow are in accordance with Garvan’s Faculty Appointment, Contract Renewal and Promotion Guidelines. The Research Fellow is responsible for independently establishing and leading a research group, conceptualising and conducting original research, providing scientific direction, financial management and ethical approval, as well as attracting peer reviewed funding. The Research Fellow will be expected to build a competitive track record and international profile through high calibre publications, and/or clinical and commercial translation. They will also be expected to contribute to the Institute and their area of discipline. The Research Fellow will receive financial support, formalised mentorship and development from Garvan. The position is a 5 year maximum term contract. Manage independent research program. Present high impact data at significant national and international scientific meetings. Consistently produce high quality research publications derived from their own research. Secure competitive funding through research grant and fellowship submissions to external funding bodies and provide prudent supervision for the proper utilisation of grant funds to support their research activities. Establish effective collaborations within and external to the Institute to progress own research. Team Leadership Lead their own research team of research assistants, postdoctoral scientists, clinical fellows and higher degree students by providing appropriate guidance, supervision and performance management to achieve goals aligned to own research vision. Manage finances of their research group. Demonstrate a collegial and collaborative approach to research. Institute Contribution Attend and actively participate in Garvan research seminars and faculty meetings. Engage in intra-program and/or cross-program collaborations Join and contribute to committees and/or working groups. Contribute to Garvan stakeholder engagement activities such as public seminars, tours, donor and fundraising activities. ABOUT YOU The key skills and experience include: The Research Fellow will have a PhD and appropriate postdoctoral experience that meets the criteria outlined in the Research Fellow Appointment Criteria.
