QUEENSLAND MIGRANT WORKWISE Position Title: Project Director Organisation: Queensland Migrant WorkWise Reports To: General Secretary, Queensland Council of Unions (QCU) Direct Reports: Communications Officer, Eight (8) Outreach Officers Salary: $174,338.83 plus 15 per cent superannuation Employment Type: Fixed-term contract commencing July 2025 to 30 June 2026 Location: South Brisbane About The Queensland Migrant WorkWise Project The Queensland Council of Unions (the QCU) through Queensland Migrant WorkWise has entered into a 12 month funded agreement with the Commonwealth Department of Home Affairs, to deliver an information and education program for temporary visa holders and their employers about their rights and obligations under the Migration Act and other work-related matters in metropolitan, regional and remote locations throughout Queensland. Queensland Migrant WorkWise is an initiative of the QCU, the state’s peak union body representing 26 affiliate unions and 400,000 Queensland union members. Role Purpose The Project Director Will Provide Strategic Leadership, Project Oversight, And Facilitate Stakeholder Engagement To Ensure The Successful Delivery Of The Queensland Migrant WorkWise Project. Reporting Directly To The General Secretary Of The QCU, The Director Will oversee all aspects of project implementation manage a team, including a communications officer and eight Outreach Officers located in Brisbane and regional centres throughout Queensland engage with key stakeholders such as temporary visa holders, their employers, unions, local business groups, local government, community groups, legal centres, and others ensure the project meets its objectives to provide an effective education and information program and resource to temporary visa holders and their employers in Queensland on their rights and obligations under migration law, the Fair Work Act and work health and safety law. Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership & Project Management Lead the overall design, planning, and execution of the Queensland Migrant WorkWise Project, ensuring alignment with project objectives and stakeholder needs. Oversee all project components, including liaison with key project partners – the Migrant Worker Centre and the Immigration Advice Rights Centre – over the provision of licenced educational and information materials and undertaking a professional development program for Queensland staff. Ensure all project milestones are met on time and within budget. Establish and maintain project governance frameworks, reporting structures, and implement effective risk management strategies. Manage input, feedback and information flow with the QCU Migrant Worker Reference Group and the QCU General Secretary. Engagement & Stakeholder Collaboration Act as the primary liaison between the project and key stakeholders, including the Department of Home Affairs, unions, employers of temporary visa holders, local business groups, local government, community groups, legal centres and others to ensure project effectiveness. Work closely and oversee and support the work of Outreach Officers to ensure local work activities are undertaken effectively and key performance indicators are met. Liaise with key industry and community stakeholders to promote and advocate for inclusion and diversity strategies and initiatives for migrant workers in targeted Queensland workplaces. Build strong partnerships to support project outcomes and ensure long-term impact within industry sectors, communities and regional areas. Communications, Advocacy & Industry Reporting Oversee the development and distribution of communications developed by the Communications Officer, including written and digital communications, and website and social media presence to ensure effectiveness of communications and project promotion. Ensure project findings and best practices are effectively communicated to stakeholders and the Department. Lead the preparation of the project report. Reporting & Accountability Provide regular updates and formal reports to the General Secretary of the QCU, ensuring transparency and accountability. Engage regularly with the Department in respect of reporting obligations and relevant contractual obligations under the funding grant agreement. Monitor and manage the project budget, ensuring financial sustainability and responsible resource allocation in conjunction with the General Secretary and finance staff. Lead project evaluation efforts to assess impact, effectiveness, and sustainability beyond the project’s duration. Key Selection Criteria Essential Proven experience in project management, leadership and advocacy, ideally within the areas of either migration workplace law, industrial relations, training and skills, or work health and safety. Knowledge of workplace laws and challenges facing migrant workers on temporary work visas in Australia and best practice inclusion and diversity policies and initiatives for culturally and linguistically diverse/migrant workers. Demonstrated ability to engage and influence stakeholders, including unions, employers, government, and community representatives and advocates. Excellent strategic planning, budget management, and team leadership skills. Strong communication, negotiation, and public speaking abilities. Commitment to inclusion and diversity and social justice principles. Desirable Familiarity with union and employer organisation structures, industrial relations frameworks, and advocacy strategies. A legal qualification (such as a Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor) or an MBA is highly desirable. Experience working within legal frameworks related to migrant worker rights and advocacy. Knowledge of Australia’s legal and policy landscape affecting migrant workers and temporary visa holders.
