The Flow Cytometry Hub sits within Garvan’s Genomics Platform and provides expertise in flow cytometry and cell sorting for both internal and external research groups. The team is also responsible for identifying and implementing new technologies and protocols. THE OPPORTUNITY The Flow Cytometry Lead is responsible for leading and developing the Flow Cytometry team, enabling innovative translational research. This role ensures the highest standards of technical excellence, user support, and scientific engagement. Key responsibilities include: Establishing strategic direction for flow cytometry at Garvan Developing a roadmap for instrument lifecycle to ensure the facility stays current Managing a core team of scientists and technologists Developing and running effective training for researchers Facilitating process integration with cellular genomics Operating as a fee for service facility, the team supports both internal and external researchers. The Lead will work collaboratively with researchers to enable high-impact science by providing expert advice on experimental design and data analysis. In addition, the team actively contributes to research and development of new technologies , assays, and protocols within the field. This will include staffing, instrumentation, operational efficiency, planning for equipment upgrades, service expansion, and adoption of emerging technologies. Management of flow cytometry and cell sorting services relating to research support, recruitment, workflows, governance (including safety and other risk management) and delegation of work. Work closely with the Cellular, Sequencing and R&D Leads, and members of the Data Science Platform to ensure effective and seamless service provision across the genomics landscape. Management and Development of Staff Guide and develop a high-performance work culture, aligned to Garvan’s values and focused on the achievement of the Platforms strategic plan. Coordinate the annual performance planning (goal setting) and review of direct reports’ performance and achievements, in consultation with the Head of Genomics Platform. Build and maintain a strong functional team through effective recruitment, coaching and team building. Develop and maintain operating processes and procedures. Financial Management Provide strategic advice and direction in the development, overall management and responsibility of the Flow Cytometry team budget and forecasts in line with Platform objectives and key performance indicators. Advise the Head of Genomics Platform on strategic planning aligned with the Genomics Platform budget and provide direction on the budget process in line with the Platform goals, including contribution to annual reviews. Business Planning Proactively identify opportunities for change within the Platform that will help enhance its ability to meet strategic goals. Analyse and provide appropriate information to the Head of Genomics Platform to inform decision-making e.g. financial, human resources, trend/operational data Engagement, Collaboration & Communication Relationship Management - advise the Head of Genomics Platform regarding the operational, financial and staffing matters for which they are responsible. Develop and maintain all relevant internal and external relationships to understand and meet the Platforms needs of stakeholder groups. Provide expert technical consultation and support business development within the Platform. A BOUT YOU EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED The key skills and experience include: Senior professional scientist with a PhD or equivalent qualification in immunology, cell biology, biotechnology, or a related field. Extensive proven experience with flow cytometry and cell sorting technologies including experimental, QC and initial data analysis software. Demonstrated experience in a management position, with financial and people leadership accountabilities. Demonstrated success bringing onboard new technologies . High order critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to develop innovative solutions. Demonstrated organisational ability and strong project management skills, including the capacity to manage multiple projects and deliver on deadlines. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including demonstrated experience in liaison, negotiation and conflict resolution with staff at all levels. Well-developed written communication skills. Highly developed computer literacy skills with the ability to access and manipulate data from laboratory systems. Experience in managing and developing staff by creating an environment in which staff want to achieve their best.
