The Role Our client is a family-owned operation near Mount Barker, WA, managing 6,700 hectares of land dedicated to their cropping, sheep, and cattle business. The property, where livestock are raised, comprises adjoining land that supports an 8,000-head Ultrawhite x Greeline sheep flock and a 550-head Sussex x Angus breeding cattle herd, with all lambs and cattle finished on-farm feedlots. Additionally, the business crops 4,500 hectares in a canola and cereal rotation, with an intention to increase it to 5,000 hectares next year through further land acquisitions. The family’s vision is to enhance production on their property to reach its full potential while expanding the business and fostering a safe, happy, and enjoyable workplace. As the Livestock Manager, you will report to the Operations Manager and supervise livestock farmhands and casual employees in day-to-day operations. You will manage cattle breeding, lamb production, and pasture. This role also involves collaborating with the cropping team to optimise grazing on crops and the marketing of all livestock. Key responsibilities include maximising stock health and performance while managing pasture effectively daily, weekly, and annually. You will be responsible for the timely organisation and implementation of key stock priorities, including but not limited to shearing, lamb marking, crutching, weaning, scanning, and following farm policies. You will also contribute to developing farm policies and understanding the annual budget requirements with management. Other responsibilities will include record-keeping for stock performance and live weights, animal diagnostics, monthly stock reconciliation, weed and pest monitoring, vehicle maintenance, and a comprehensive diary. You will monitor animal health status and maintain accurate records per farm policies. Liaising with staff and contractors will ensure tasks are completed on time and satisfactorily. Additionally, you should be capable of performing general farm repairs and maintenance, including fencing, water reticulation systems, and other equipment. Above all, work must comply with the Health and Safety in Employment Act, its amendments and regulations, and the property's Health and Safety Policies and Procedures. The Offer The successful candidate will receive a competitive remuneration package that includes a family home and a work vehicle. The house is a spacious four-bedroom residence currently being repainted and recarpeted. It features open plan living, an ensuite bathroom in the master bedroom, a large office, an enclosed yard, and air conditioning. It is only a short five-minute drive to the main farm work area. There is a school bus stop at the end of the road that services both primary and high schools. The primary schools are Kendenup and Mount Barker, while the high school is in Mount Barker. It takes about 5 minutes to drive to the bus stop, followed by a 20-minute bus ride to school. Ideally, you will possess the following attributes: A high level of stockmanship skills and a solid understanding of the basic biology of animals, soil, and plants. A comprehension of the seasonal nutritional and health requirements of key classes of livestock. A willingness to take on responsibilities, confidence in working independently, and the knowledge, experience, and initiative to plan an effective day’s work without supervision. The ability to observe problems or potential opportunities, think through the consequences, and offer constructive suggestions.
