Reporting into the General Manager, Asset Management, the Baggage Services Manager (BHS) is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the baggage handling system (BHS) at WSI. The position ensures efficient and safe management of luggage from check-in to loading & unloading and in compliance with stakeholder (customer and airline partners) expectations and regulatory standards. The role involves working with the Airport Operations team and the BHS maintenance service provider in managing and implementing procedures to enhance reliability and performance in baggage handling, ensuring seamless baggage operations. NOTE: In the initial stages of the role and during commissioning, the role may from time to time assist in other areas of the team within the individual’s scope of knowledge and experience – with the likelihood that this will carry over into the early days of Airport operations. Key Responsibilities Manage relationships and coordinate with service providers, airlines, ground handling staff, and other airport departments (Airport Operations) to ensure timely baggage processing. Provide first contact with the BHS operations and maintenance service provider, providing guidance, training, and performance evaluations, participating in audits / inspections conducted by regulatory bodies and airport partners (ABF, DAFF, etc). Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and standards, including those set by aviation authorities. Manage and monitor the performance of the baggage handling system to ensure timely, smooth and efficient operations, enacting appropriate interventions as identified. Assist, troubleshoot and resolve any issues or malfunctions in the system operations or equipment promptly. Collaborate with maintenance personnel for routine and emergency repairs of baggage handling equipment. Oversee routine maintenance and inspections of the baggage handling system to ensure reliability and safety. Enforce safety regulations and WSI procedures to ensure a safe working environment for all staff engaged and using the BHS. Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and system performance ensuring the Asset Management System (AMS) is updated with timely and accurate information. Prepare and submit regular reports on system performance, incidents, and maintenance activities. Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices to enhance system efficiency. Provide advice and oversight during planning, design and implementation phase of future development of the baggage handling system. Address customer inquiries and complaints related to baggage handling promptly and professionally. Stay updated on industry trends and advancements in baggage handling technology. Qualifications, Skills & Attributes Tertiary qualifications in management, logistics, or a related field is preferred. Minimum of 10 years of senior level experience in baggage handling systems (or similar) in an airport environment. Strong leadership and team management skills. Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities, with the ability to handle challenges in an appropriate and efficient manner. Highly proficient in computer systems and software related to baggage handling operations. Knowledge of airport operations and regulatory requirements. Ability to be collaborative and supportive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with a range of diverse stakeholders Ability to prepare timely reports and documentation relating to the performance of the baggage handling system and the service provider. Experience participating in audits / inspections conducted by regulatory bodies and airport partners. Ability to work effectively in various and diverse environments such as baggage handling areas, control rooms and maintenance facilities. To support WSI and ensure the smooth operation of the BHS during commissioning and airport opening, the role may require temporary work hours during nights, weekends or public holidays.
