Your role at St John of God Midland Hospital The Short Stay Unit is currently looking for a Patient Care Assistant (PCA).This role is an integral multi-disciplinary team member providing a high standard of care for patients in the areas of patient care, patient transport and support of the nursing/midwifery care team as directed. The Patient Care Assistant carries out their duties as directed by, and under the supervision of, a Registered Nurse/Midwife. The Position Works within the limits of their competency as assessed consistent with nationally recognised training and competency standards. All direct patient care is carried out under the direction and supervision of Registered Nurse/Midwife/Enrolled Nurses. Liaises with the Registered Nurse/Midwife/Enrolled Nurse at all times and observes and reports all matters relevant to the wellbeing of the patient. Perform manual handling of patients under supervision of Registered Nurse/Midwife/Enrolled Nurses. Maintains confidentiality, privacy and dignity of patients and demonstrates empathy and sensitivity towards patients and relatives. Understand role in an emergency and follow direction of the Coordinator. Maintain safe environment for patient contributing to patient comfort needs. Contribute to an efficient and timely patient admission, transfer and discharge process. Assist Registered Nurse/Midwife/Enrolled Nurses in care of deceased patients. Maintain safe, clean unit environment in accordance with duty list that contribute to patient/ caregiver comfort needs. Maintain tidiness and cleanliness of the area including Nurses station, treatment and pan rooms and storage areas and undertakes restocking of supplies and linen as directed by the Registered Nurse/Midwife. Contribute to an efficient and timely patient admission, transfer and discharge process. Communicate effectively with all customers and patients using the appropriate channels, utilising appropriate formal and informal channels of communication. Utilise appropriate formal and informal channels of communication. Answer telephone using appropriate telephone technique. Seek appropriate information to ensure quality patient care and feedback to Registered Nurse/Midwife/Enrolled Nurse responsible for the patient care. Position Requirements The ideal candidate will hold a Certificate III in Health Service Assistance (Client/Patient Services) or have significant relevant experience that meets the competencies of the role. They will demonstrate well-developed communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently, prioritise tasks, and follow direction from Registered Nurses and Midwives to support learning and development. A strong team focus, understanding of manual handling principles, and knowledge of basic hygiene and cleanliness standards are essential. The candidate should also have food handling skills and a sound understanding of hygiene practices, along with a commitment to quality improvement and infection control standards within a healthcare environment.
