The Assistant Head of Secondary – Teaching and Learning is a pivotal leadership role focused on fostering a culture of academic excellence and spiritual growth. This position is responsible for the strategic direction and oversight of teaching practices, ensuring that they are both pedagogically sound and aligned to a Christian Worldview. The Assistant Head of Secondary – Teaching and Learning will lead initiatives to support the diverse learning needs of students, including those requiring additional support and those in extension programs. Additionally, this role is key in identifying and implementing professional development opportunities for staff, guiding their professional growth, and ensuring high standards of teaching through effective performance management. Academic Qualifications: Minimum Bachelor of Education or equivalent in relevant teaching areas. Relevant Postgraduate qualifications would be an advantage. Desirable: Masters of Education related to Pedagogy. Key Responsibilities: Educational Leadership Lead and oversee the implementation of effective pedagogical practices that align with the Christian Worldview and educational philosophy of the College. Collaborate with Heads of Learning Area and teaching staff to ensure consistency in pedagogy and classroom management across the college. Promote innovative teaching approaches that enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. Ensure that teaching and learning practices within the college are aligned with both the AITSL Teaching Standards, Australian Curriculum and the college’s Christian values. Oversee the identification and support of students with diverse learning needs, including those requiring additional support and those participating in extension programs. Lead the development and implementation of effective academic tracking systems to monitor student achievement, identify learning trends, and support targeted teaching strategies that enhance student outcomes. Oversee the Head of Additional Needs and Gifted and Talented Coordinator to ensure cohesive, inclusive, and differentiated learning pathways for all students. Strategic Planning and Development Contribute to the college’s strategic planning process by providing insights and recommendations related to teaching and learning to the Head of Secondary and College Executive. Lead initiatives that drive improvement, particularly in the areas of instructional quality, student achievement, and teacher professional development. Work closely with the Assistant Head Primary – Teaching and Learning to ensure that pedagogy is effectively aligned with curriculum goals, assessment practices, and student learning outcomes. Engage in ongoing reflection and data analysis to identify areas for growth and implement evidence-based practices that enhance student learning. Manage budget, resources, and facilities efficiently, ensuring they support effective teaching and learning. Contribute as a key figure in the planning and execution of strategic projects that align with the school’s mission, vision and strategic goals. Professional Development and Teacher Growth Identify and discuss with the Head of Secondary professional development needs for teaching staff, ensuring that opportunities are aligned with both individual growth goals and College objectives. Coordinate and oversee the probation and development of new teaching staff, ensuring they are effectively supported and aligned with the school’s pedagogical expectations. Organise and present professional development sessions, workshops, and training that focus on best practice in teaching, curriculum delivery, and the integration of a Christian worldview. Foster a culture of continuous professional growth among teachers by providing regular feedback, mentoring, and coaching. Monitor and evaluate teacher performance, ensuring that high standards of teaching are maintained. Address underperformance promptly and constructively, providing targeted support and, if necessary, implementing performance improvement plans in accordance with college policy and procedures. Identify and improve staff practices, beliefs or behaviours which do not align with policy and college expectations, while maintaining a relationship of trust. Mentor and support staff in pedagogy, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement. Lead annual staff reviews, ensuring a focus on professional growth, goal setting, and the ongoing development of staff capabilities. Community and Stakeholder Engagement Build and maintain strong relationships with students, parents, and the broader college community, ensuring open communication and active engagement. Represent the College at events, meetings, and public forums, advocating for the needs and achievements of both students and staff. Liaise with external stakeholders, including educational bodies, other schools, and industry partners, to enhance learning opportunities and resources. Other Responsibilities Attend relevant school events and support the implementation of strategic initiatives as delegated by the Head of School or Principal Contribute to school devotions, assemblies, duties and community life as appropriate Actively engage in College-wide leadership initiatives. It is an expectation that Assistant Heads will be available in the non-contact weeks including Term 1 office week, the whole of the July PD week and Term 4 office week.
