About the opportunity The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) conducts safety regulation of civil air operations in Australia, Australian civil airspace and the operation of Australian aircraft overseas. Safety, Risk and Intelligence is a Branch of Air Navigation, Transformation and Risk (ANTR) Division and is responsible for analysis of safety data and the management of enterprise and Aviation Safety risk for the organisation, including the development of risk profiling to enhance CASA's and industry's decision making. The branch is also responsible for development of regulations, associated guidance material, as well as internal standardisation materials and advice related to safety management systems (SMS) and risk management. The Safety Intelligence and Analysis (SIA) Section provides analytical and data services to CASA and State Safety Program (SSP) partner agencies including the provision of robust, accurate and timely evidence-based information to support decisions. The team also develops self-service tools / products to allow business areas to have ready and ongoing access to data and data analysis capabilities. The Safety Intelligence and Analysis Section will also support CASA business areas. Section Manager Safety Intelligence and Analysis works under the broad direction of the National Manager Safety, Risk and Intelligence (Chief Risk Officer) and utilises open and effective communication skills to provide high-quality advice to support the development of complex to highly-complex risk management strategies and associated material and process, including support to other CASA branches and key internal and external stakeholders. This role draws upon the knowledge and experience of other technical specialists within and external to CASA as required. This is a leadership position that leads complex and highly complex projects involving a multi-disciplinary team of risk, regulatory, safety and performance professionals. This role works with a high level of autonomy under broad direction with a concurrent need to resolve issues and deliver quality outcomes. The key duties of the position include Our ideal candidate Our ideal candidate must demonstrate the following: Tertiary qualification including statistical analysis (e.g., Mathematics, Data Science, Accounting or Finance). Demonstrated ability to lead a specialist team or demonstrated people management experience with an ability to coach and mentor staff and lead a team to deliver on challenging objectives. Recent and extensive (5 years) operational statistical analysis experience, having delivered positive safety outcomes within an operational setting. Ability to work under indirect guidance from CASA in accordance with established regulatory practices, operational needs, procedures, and assigned delegations. Ability to exercise initiative, analysis, problem solving, judgement, and decision-making and apply technical knowledge on matters where standards, policies and procedures may or may not cover the circumstances. Highly developed negotiation, facilitation, influencing and communication skills (written and verbal), to manage disparate views amongst stakeholders, including at a senior level. A working knowledge of the aviation industry, civil aviation legislation, and relevant national and international aviation standards. The following ideal candidate requirements are desirable: Knowledge and/or experience in risk management principles and practices, and SMS. Project management experience. Developed knowledge of the aviation industry. Knowledge of ICAO safety intelligence related standards and recommended practices. An Australian Class C drivers' licence.
