$144,430 - $173,359 10% BDCP up to 15.4% Superannuation Canberra - ACT The Role The Commercial Director plays a critical role in supporting the Integrated Air and Missile Defence Command & Control (IAMDC2) Program, providing commercial and financial leadership across the AIR6500 Joint Air Battle Management System (JABMS) Project and broader ADS Branch activities. The role supports the delivery of complex acquisition and sustainment outcomes through commercial strategy, procurement governance, contract formation and management, financial oversight, and risk management. Reporting to Director General ADS and working closely with Project leadership, the position provides commercial advice and evidence-based decision support for major investment proposals, industry engagements, market testing, and procurement activities. The role ensures compliance with Defence policy and Commonwealth procurement requirements while supporting value-for-money outcomes and effective stewardship of public resources. Given the strategic significance and scale of future air defence investments, the position requires strong commercial acumen, financial management capability, and the ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships to enable informed decision-making and successful capability delivery. About our Team The team provides commercial, financial and procurement leadership to support the delivery of Air Defence Systems Branch outcomes and specifically, Integrated Air and Missile Defence Command & Control (IAMDC2) Project and broader AIR6500 capability outcomes. Its primary functions include developing and implementing commercial strategies; managing complex procurement, contracting and sustainment activities; providing financial oversight and governance; and ensuring effective risk management across major Defence investments. The team delivers commercial advice and evidence-based decision support for investment proposals, industry engagement, market analysis, procurement planning, contract negotiations and contract management activities. It ensures compliance with Defence policies and Commonwealth Procurement Rules while driving value-for-money outcomes and sound stewardship of public resources. The team also supports stakeholder engagement across Defence, industry and government, enabling informed decision-making and successful capability delivery. In addition, it promotes continuous improvement, knowledge transfer and workforce development, strengthening commercial and financial capability through mentoring, up skilling and collaboration across the APS and ADF workforce. Our Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate will bring significant commercial, financial and procurement expertise in Major Capital Equipment Acquisition and Sustainment programs, with a proven ability to deliver complex procurement and contracting outcomes across the full life cycle. They will have strong financial management experience, commercial acumen, and a demonstrated focus on achieving value-for-money outcomes, effective governance, and sound risk management in accordance with Commonwealth Procurement Rules. The successful candidate will be highly adaptable, collaborative and capable of operating within a complex, integrated stakeholder environment, building strong relationships across Defence, industry and government. They will be committed to delivering optimal capability and commercial outcomes for the IAMDC2 Project and other branch activities, while supporting continuous improvement, knowledge transfer and workforce development. A strong commitment to mentoring and up skilling APS and ADF personnel will be essential to strengthen organisational capability and ensure enduring commercial and financial expertise across the blended workforce. The candidate will bring proven executive leadership and management capability to provide strong direction and oversight of the commercial team, while effectively influencing broader Air Defence Systems outcomes and engaging a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders. At times, the incumbent may be required to operate beyond the scope of the Commercial Director role, acting on behalf of the Director General Air Defence Systems (DG ADS) and exercising broader senior executive responsibilities and accountabilities commensurate with those of a senior Commonwealth leader.
