Walgett Shire Council is looking for a capable and practical roads leader to help deliver one of the most significant local government roads programs in regional New South Wales. This is a role for someone who wants real operational responsibility, a large and varied program of work, and the opportunity to make a visible difference across a diverse rural Shire. This position is not only office based but out in the field as well working together and building strong relationships with the team supervisors. The Operations Manager Roads plays a key role in overseeing the day-to-day delivery of Council’s road construction and maintenance activities across local and regional roads. Reporting to the Executive Manager Roads, and supported by 3 skilled supervisors, you will help drive a major roads program that includes more than $12 million in capital works in the next financial year, together with an operating budget of almost the same amount. You will coordinate crews, plant, materials and scheduling across multiple work fronts, monitor quality and productivity, support safe and efficient work practices, and help ensure Council’s roads program is delivered to the expected standards. You will also work closely with operational staff and senior leaders to translate plans into practical outcomes on the ground. About you: You are practical, organised and confident leading roads operations in a hands-on environment. You know how to keep works moving, support frontline supervisors and crews, and balance safety, quality, resources and deadlines in a busy operational setting. You are comfortable being accountable for outcomes, making decisions on the ground, and working closely with others to deliver results. Although local government experience will be well regarded, we are open to candidates from other sectors who can demonstrate strong roads or civil operations experience, sound judgement, and the ability to lead in a practical rural environment.
