Full-time, permanent role Hybrid working arrangement with two days WFH each week. Work on AI projects across commercial, space and defence sectors. Be part of a small, highly skilled engineering team where your contributions are visible and valued. Genuine career progression as the organisation continues to grow. Our client is an Australian technology company delivering advanced AI, machine learning, robotics and simulation solutions across commercial, space and defence sectors. Working alongside experienced machine learning and software engineers, you'll help develop intelligent systems that tackle challenging technical problems across a diverse range of projects. Purpose of the role: We're looking for a Machine Learning Engineer / Data Scientist with around 3–5 years' industry experience who enjoys solving challenging problems and building production-quality AI systems. This is a hands-on technical role where you'll contribute from research and experimentation through to production deployment and ongoing optimisation. This role is suited to engineers who understand the theory behind machine learning—not just how to use AI libraries. We're looking for someone who can explain why a model works, why it fails, and how to improve it. You'll work across a variety of projects involving machine learning, LLMs, agentic AI, MLOps and software engineering. Key Accountabilities: Develop and deploy machine learning solutions using Python. Build predictive models for forecasting, anomaly detection, classification, regression and computer vision. Design LLM applications using Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), structured outputs, function calling and agentic AI workflows. Build AI systems using frameworks such as LangChain and LangGraph. Train, fine-tune and deploy models using PyTorch, Hugging Face, scikit-learn and related technologies. Create scalable ML pipelines covering data ingestion, training, evaluation, deployment and monitoring. Integrate AI solutions with APIs, cloud platforms, databases and backend services. Collaborate with experienced machine learning and software engineers to take innovative concepts through to production-ready solutions. Essential requirements: Around 3–5 years' experience in Machine Learning, Data Science, AI Engineering or a related software engineering role. Strong Python development skills with experience building production-ready applications. Hands-on experience with machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow or scikit-learn. A solid understanding of machine learning algorithms, statistics and the mathematical principles that underpin model development. Experience working with LLMs, NLP, computer vision, predictive modelling or time-series forecasting. Knowledge of modern AI techniques including transformers, embeddings, RAG and agentic AI. The ability to analyse model performance, troubleshoot issues and continuously improve solutions. Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a highly technical team. Experience with FastAPI, Docker, AWS, CI/CD, SQL, Hugging Face, LangChain, LangGraph or MLOps practices will be highly regarded.
