Defence Science & Technology Organisation (DSTO now DSTG) Port Melbourne 3 year contract options Career defining move for an experienced Composite technician Your mission The Panel Member will provide technical support to the work program within the Hazard Management and Individual Protection Group in Land Division. This group assesses the effectiveness of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) decontamination, detection and protection solutions against chemical warfare agents (CWA), and toxic industrial chemicals (TIC) and investigates and develops new solutions specific for ADF needs. You will be required to have proven, high level wet chemistry laboratory skills, and be experienced and highly competent in the handling of toxic chemicals. have competent practical skills with analytical instrumentation. undergo training with, and to wear a full face respirator and undergo significant induction training including the use and handling of highly toxic chemicals. Tasks include: a. assist with assessing mixtures and solutions including: running analytical equipment [Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectroscopy (GC/MS), Liquid Chromatograph-Mass Spectroscopy (LC/MS), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)], general laboratory wet chemistry, and extraction techniques; b. assist with design, fabrication and testing of rigs for assessment of chemical detectors; c. assist with design, fabrication and testing of rigs for assessment of chemical decontaminants; d. participate in routine assessment of COTS chemical detectors as required; e. be trained, willing and able to handle highly toxic materials under supervision; f. use purpose built equipment attached to a vapour generator and MS to assess breakthrough of respirator canisters; g. assist with testing and development of prototype chemical detectors; h. assist with formulation and testing of new decontaminant solutions; and i. assist with general running of chemical laboratories as required. You'll need • Honours degree in Chemistry (or equivalent experience) • Demonstrated hands-on experience in the operation of chemistry laboratory analytical instrumentation • Well-developed wet chemistry skills and a demonstrated ability to perform experimental work including design and set-up • Demonstrated ability to use professional judgement and initiative in solving technical problems. • Good communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, with the scientific community.
