About the role The Cloud Engineer plays a critical role in designing, implementing, and maintaining secure, scalable, and resilient cloud and hybrid infrastructure environments that support the department’s digital services and transformation initiatives. Working within a multidisciplinary ICT team, the Cloud Engineer ensures that cloud platforms, applications, and supporting systems are delivered in alignment with government security frameworks, architectural standards, and best practice engineering methodologies. You bring deep technical capability, a collaborative approach, and a strong commitment to secure, scalable design. You communicate clearly, work effectively across distributed teams, and understand how cloud platforms underpin the broader mission of a national research organisation. Key Responsibilities Cloud Platform Engineering Design, implement, and operate cloud and hybrid infrastructure workloads using Azure, AWS, and Microsoft 365 services. Modernise and refactor legacy applications to leverage cloud native services and architectures. Support cloud migration, optimisation, and integration activities across identity, networking, storage, and application platforms. Security, Compliance and Governance Implement and enforce cloud security controls in alignment with the Protective Security Policy Framework, Essential Eight, and whole of government cyber security requirements. Manage secure configuration of cloud services including policies, key management, identity, and access controls. Monitor and optimise cloud environments for performance, cost efficiency, and security posture. Operational Support and Troubleshooting Investigate, analyse, and resolve complex issues across cloud and on premises environments, including root cause analysis. Support hybrid infrastructure dependencies including Windows Server, Active Directory, virtualisation platforms, storage, and backup systems. Deliver improvements to resilience, disaster recovery, and business continuity capabilities. Collaboration, Documentation and Stakeholder Engagement Work closely with stakeholders to deliver stable, secure, and fit for purpose cloud solutions aligned with departmental architecture and standards. Required Skills and Experience Demonstrated experience delivering cloud and hybrid infrastructure services in complex enterprise and/or government environments. Strong hands on experience with Azure and or AWS cloud platforms including security, networking, identity, and automation. Specific Microsoft technology experience is highly regarded. Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Bicep, ARM, Terraform, Azure CLI, and PowerShell. Ability to work within Agile delivery environments and contribute to continuous improvement.
