About the Position: The Welder (First Class) is an essential hands-on role within the fabrication team, responsible for producing accurate, high-strength welded and fabricated components that form the backbone of custom truck bodies and repair work. Working from engineering drawings and specifications, the welder prepares materials, executes precise welds using a range of processes, and ensures every joint meets strict quality and safety standards. This position is critical to the company’s ability to deliver compliant, long-lasting products on schedule and directly supports Platinum Truck Body & Repair’s reputation for excellence in heavy vehicle manufacturing and repair. Key Responsibilities: Study and interpret blueprints, drawings and specifications to determine welding and fabrication requirements for truck bodies and components. Select, clean, prepare and align metal stock and parts using hand tools, measuring instruments and appropriate machinery. Cut, shape and form metal sections and components using hand tools, flame cutting torches, and metal cutting and forming equipment to precise tolerances. Join metal sections and components using various welding techniques (including MIG, TIG and arc welding), bolting and riveting to achieve strong, clean and compliant results. Examine completed welds for bead width, penetration, precision and overall quality, performing grinding, cleaning and any necessary rework to meet specifications. Maintain welding equipment in good working order and consistently apply workplace health and safety practices, including safe handling of hot work, fumes and materials. Collaborate effectively with fabricators, fitters and other workshop team members to keep projects on track and ensure finished work meets the required standard and timeline. Contribute to a clean, organised and efficient workshop while upholding the company’s commitment to quality craftsmanship and customer satisfaction. Requirements : Australian citizens and permanent residents are encouraged to apply. Certificate III in Engineering (Fabrication Trade) or an equivalent trade qualification is required. A minimum of one year of relevant post-qualification experience in welding and metal fabrication is essential (experience in heavy vehicle, truck body or transport equipment work is highly regarded). Demonstrated proficiency in MIG, TIG and manual metal arc welding, together with the ability to accurately read and interpret complex engineering drawings and specifications. Strong technical skills in metal preparation, cutting, forming, finishing and quality inspection, combined with a thorough understanding of welding-related workplace health and safety requirements. Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a productive workshop team. Good communication and interpersonal skills, with a proactive and reliable approach to safety, quality and meeting production goals.
