Job description Climate Data Scientist – Contract Opportunity 12-month contract with possible extension Locations: Open to all States (Hybrid working) Must be an Australian citizen eligible to obtain Baseline Security Clearance DFP Recruitment is seeking an experienced Climate Data Scientist to join a Federal Government client to support climate science, climate variability analysis and operational data services across the Pacific region. This role focuses on developing high-quality climate datasets, supporting climate analytics platforms, and contributing to climate research and stakeholder engagement initiatives across Pacific Island nations while supporting the ongoing enhancement and maintenance of a climate analytics portal used for analysing trends in meteorological parameters and climate extremes across the region. The role also includes occasional travel to Pacific Island countries for stakeholder engagement, training delivery, and collaboration activities. Key Responsibilities Support maintenance and enhancement of climate analytics and reporting platforms. Update and manage quality-controlled and homogeneous station timeseries datasets for meteorological parameters. Perform climate data analysis, trend analysis, and climate extremes assessment. Develop scientific reports, technical documentation, publications, and stakeholder-facing materials. Design and deliver training materials and workshops for Pacific stakeholders. Contribute to scientific discussions, presentations, and collaborative reporting activities. Support operational data management, governance, and data quality assurance activities. Collaborate with national and international stakeholders across climate and environmental science programs. Participate in program planning, reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives. Work autonomously and collaboratively to deliver outcomes within agreed timelines. Required Skills & Experience The Candidates will have: A strong background in climate science that includes familiarity with climate change extremes analyses as well as climate variability and change in the Pacific region. Good knowledge of climate data and observations, the associated homogeneity issues, and appropriate scientific methods for analysing climate variations and trends with an emphasis on climate extremes. Good understanding of methods of climate analysis and relevant climate research. Demonstrated ability in developing and modifying scientific code for statistical analysis and handling large datasets. Experience developing training and reference material as well as experience delivering this type of training in countries where English is a second language. Sound inter-personal skills and the confidence to liaise with national and international organisations. Demonstrated team working skills and experience of working in a team. Demonstrated time management skills and self-motivation, and the ability to work autonomously and in a team environment with minimal supervision to meet deadlines is essential.
