The University of New South Wales invites expressions of interest from suitably qualified individuals to join its Human Research Ethics Committee in the following membership categories: Qualified Lawyer A person who may or may not currently be practising law and, where possible, is not involved in providing legal advice to UNSW on research or related matters. Lay Member A person who brings a community or consumer perspective to the review of research. Role of the HREC The Human Research Ethics Committee reviews human research proposals to ensure compliance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research and other applicable requirements governing research conducted by UNSW staff, students, and affiliates. Selection Criteria Suitable candidates will: Demonstrate an interest in the ethical review of human research Be able to commit to the responsibilities outlined below For the qualified lawyer category, hold appropriate legal qualifications Responsibilities of HREC Members Members are expected to: Review approximately 2 to 3 research applications per month and prepare spokesperson comments (approximately 1 to 2 hours of reading time per meeting) Attend 11 online meetings per year, each lasting approximately 3 hours Contribute to the ethical review and decision-making process for research that is greater than low risk, ensuring alignment with national and UNSW ethical guidelines Participate in relevant training and professional development activities How to apply Please complete the online expression of interest form.
